steamy windows

Steve up north

New member
Hi all,
my windsrcreen and both passenger windows steam up cold weather worse, thought it was my mother in law doing it but it still happpens when she is not in car lol, any tips on what to prevent it or have i got a fault? the car has a mouldy smell to it...

Sounds like you have a fault and the airflow is blocked on that side, so needs further investigation.

Ref the mouldy smell, I’d sanitise your aircon system. I had similar in one of my cars after a long period of inactivity due to lockdown.

I used Autoglym Air-Con Sanitiser, which worked well.

You may have a water leak / ingress ... check under the carpets

When was the aircon last serviced - re-gassed, pollen filter changed ?

I agree with Andrew. Sounds like one of the drainage channels has blocked up or window membranes has perforated which leads to water ingress into the car.

Get it checked out sooner rather than later in case it damages the ECU located under the passenger seat

Hi Steve,
Further to wet carpets under seats, is the blower switching from re-circulation? I had this on an every day car where flap wasn't changing & instead of demisting just steamed up the interior...
Try the different buttons, you should hear flaps moving redirecting air flow.

Thx for all your replies, although the blower works I will check with recirculation, I have ordered some Kontrol crystals. I have to drop car off to get a new key fob tuned, so I will ask to check drain holes when I get a date to get it in.

Hope it gets resolved soon, especially with this damp and murky weather we're having. I have to admit, when I saw the thread title I thought you were just showing off :)

I have got the car booked in, they think as it is not a cabriolet, it may be either a blocked drain hole or ingress through into the doors, also the pcm/abs dashlights comes on after about 10 mins of driving, if I switch engine off and start again no lights and comes on again after 10 mins or so. It has just had a wheel sensor cable fitted osr last month, so they will have a look at the ecu logs to find the trouble, I have had the crystals in he car for about a week, they seem dry?

Weird that the crystals seem dry - is there an indicator on the pack that advises you when to "recharge" them? I've got some that sit in my wife's convertible and there is a colour change pad on the pack that basically tells you when to recharge them (i.e. dry them out).

Is the car less damp inside?

Hmm, ithe crystals have a special container, not loose in a pack, the package was of 6 plastic sealed tub's with holes in the top filled with crystals, you get rid of the sealed plastic film, there is a cavity in the bottom of the tub to collect the water vapor from the crystals, when I looked there was no water in the bottom, but there did not seem to have any steamy windows, wether that is due to the weather or crystals, not sure but still has a musty smell, I keep spraying fabric perfume in the car

I had that on a Jeep Cherokee and it was a leaking heater matrix , screen was constantly steamed up and it used coolant.
