Gentlemen, I don't know if anyone can offer any advice but this morning the car started, as usual, with no problems. I drove my usual 13 or 14 miles to work, stopped at the newsagents, came out and the car wouldn't start. It would turn over on the starter without any problems but wouldn't fire up. I walked the rest of the way to work and returned to the car a couple of hours later whereupon it started. Any ideas? It's a 2000 C4 by the way and has 123,000 trouble free miles on it and while I'm on, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Possibly the crank position sensor. When they start to fail, they stop working when the engine heats up, and start working again when the engine cools. It would be best to get a diagnostic check done to see if there are fault codes. There is an article in the Technical Articles section which shows where it is and how to change it.
Another possibility is the fuel pump relay. That gives the same symptoms as the crank sensor, but usually doesn't log fault codes.

Is it a tip?. Mine did that and it was a sensor in the tip shift lever.
before I fixed it, the way round it was put it gear and give it a push, even if it moved maybe a couple of millimetres it would then start. It may work for you but it's better than leaving car !!!!!

Also, check the fuel vent valve at the engine end - I had something like this going on for around 18 months - see my saga here...!

Thanks for the further replies gentlemen, however, I've bought the crank sensor before seeing your suggestions. Anyway here's my next question, how do you get the bloody plug out? I started to remove the sensor body and the cap screw broke, this is becoming commonplace with the age of these cars apparently, anyway I thought I'll worry about that later but I can't seperate the plug from the socket. Access is poor and no matter where I seem to lie I can't see how they seperate, is there a knack to it? I've never taken so long to do nothing and the original sensor is now back in place and held in with blue tac. Any advice greatly received.
