Starter Motor Problems?

Haven't replaced a starter on the 911 yet, but from previous experience try the following;
Dissconnect the battery, and clean all the wire connections to the Solenoid (ontop of starter), plus the terminals on the solenoid it self.
Sometimes, the circuit from the ignition key has deteriated (high resistance). A way to prove this is, run a wire (temp- under the car) from the battery to this terminal (on solenoid). If starter runs Ok, then this could be the issue.
Or the solenoid has dirty contacts inside?
What's the prob?

I am experiencing a similar problem. I have an 85 3.2. i get in and it starts, i go for a drive................. doesnt matter how far, 1-40 miles and i park up and when i return nothing. i get to the cranking possition on the ignition and all that happens is an audible hum as i try to engage the starter.
The car will start (ignition on) with a very slight push. The ignition barrel is worn, sometimes the key will not turn at all without a bit of a battle so i made a dession and i have ordered a new ignition assembly (i got it from the states as the dollar is so weak at the moment) i am waiting for it to arrive.
My theory is that it could be the starter or the ignition and maybe both but the ignition needs attention anyway so..........................
The battery has been checked and it is in tiptop condition.
If the problem is still there then i will need to change the starter (again the states seems to be the best deal................ $215 for a high torque unit, brand new non exchange)

On of my employees was out in a brand new Mondeo of ours, stopped to collect a parcel from a customer and couldnt restart the car. As lights were OK etc, he suspected the starter motor, found a brick and smashed the fcuk out of what he thought was the starter motor, which turned out to be the alternator. Subsequent arrival of the RAC, engineer pointed out to my technically astute driver that you had to take the auto gear shift out of D before you can start the car!!
