square dash covers, consumption and panels?

hi you might have seen my 944 on ebay a while ago... well i bought it, fixed it and love it... and finally got to a finish line today when i replaced the steering wheel which was broken (only after buying another one which had a different boss (911?)... so had to swap and restitch the brown leather, (pete) ground off the old rivets to swap the boss... 2 minute job!?)

anyway.... getting to the point... my fuel gauge always shows a full tank... which is wonderful, you have no idea how much money having one of those fuel gauges can save someone...

however, being the cautious consumer that I am and having a mild grasp of the laws of physics I top up my full tank every now and then to make sure it doesn't get less full than it might believe itself to be.... and of course I know that if I unleash the demon around a bend or straight or two (which often happens although I have no idea how..) i was wondering if any of you officianditos know what the fuel consumption figures are for an 8v 2.5 Lux were suggested to be.... I'm topping up at every 125 miles because I can't be bothered to fix the gauge, like the feeling of looking at a full tank all the time and don't particularly want to run the risk of running out in the fast lane of the M27... but was curious as to how many miles I might get out of a tank at (within reason) sensible driving...

so any idea of the miles per litre/gallon official figures?

and also are the first issue '82 944's the only ones with 'PORSCHE' written along the door panels directly under the window?

forgot to add.. are the 'dash covers' which fit over the cracks any good or do they look tosh?

29 or 30 mpg if driven modestly. The porsche scripted door cards was a square dash thing. Can't help with the dash covers as mine is an oval sorry mate.

I never worked out the mpg exactly on my square dash, but I'm pretty sure I didn't get much over 25, unless I was on a steady sort of run.

The dash covers I've seen do look ok to good - depends I think on how much effort went into fitting them, if you know what I mean!

I think Porsche door trims were not a 944 fitment, but often retro fitted from a 924 - I know the '83 944s didn't have them, I put them in mine.

I worked out my MPG once having covered a variety of driving, was 28.5 mpg

I don't have the Porsche script on my square dash door cards, maybe it was only the real early ones? Mines 1983. I think 924's had these door cards too?

I usually work on about 1/2 miles per £
If i put £50 in would expect to get 250 miles from her
Maybe a bit less from last week
(Since i packed up smoking i seem to be a bit right foot heavy)

Regarding Dash covers
I got one recently.Its not fitted yet but just resting on the original dash.
It looks OK but i was expecting it to look alot nicer.
Its not padded just a hard fibreglass finish.

My all-time best fuel consumption was on a recent trip to Germany. Following some friends towing trailers at ~70mph, I manged it door-to-door on a single (early steel) tank ~410miles and 36mpg. Having arrived at my destination I found a lovely toll road and the next tank dissapeared in ~200miles and 17mpg. [8D]

I would agree with the early posts an say around 28mpg average or ~ 320 miles with normal driving (assuming the engine is healthy).

Official figures are as follows:
Urban --- 24.8mpg
56 ---- 40.4mpg
75 ---- 32.5mpg

Yeah, I always assumed that would be the case with those covers. It's a shame really.

There must be a big enough market for someone to want to remanufacture these dashboards?

I looked at getting dashboards recovered properly a couple of years ago - it was working out at about £300 - would have been less if there were a couple - no takers.

Funnily enough though, I have just been asked by my favourite trimmers if he could try to recover one as he has some new ideas or subcontractor or something - if anything interesting comes of it I will post on the forum.

Yesterday when I filled up I had done 340 miles on 3/4 tank in the Turbo! took about £70 to fill it up and I hadn't been hanging around either!

For my 1985 square dash the official figures are -

SIMULATED URBAN DRIVING - 11,4 litres/100km = 24.8mpg
CONSTANT SPEED DRIVING 90kph (56 mph) - 7.0 litres/100km = 40.4 mpg [:-] !!
CONSTANT SPEED DRIVING 120kph (75mph) - 8.7 litres / 100 km = 32.5 mpg

I haven't worked out my personal MPG, I operate kinda like sirlisterofsmeg above.

Fuel tank holds 66 litres, 9 litre in reserve (so roughly say 70l)

My fuel gage needle will hit the bottom mark and stay there for ages - possibly beause the fuel tank got replaced at some point and it wasn't set correct, even with a full tank the needle never reaches the top mark - so I top up around then.
I find I put about 45L in and I've usually done around 250miles, so that's pretty good going as there *should* be another 20 litres before I hit the reserve! I'm sure I've had it up to 300 before on a long straight journey, but I start to panic with the needle being off that I could be running on fumes! Never a good idea too anyway what with all the dredge at the bottom of the tank. But yea, I reckon it's around 30mpg - not bad for a 'sports car'
