Speedo not working

I am a relatively new 3.2 owner, trying to pick my way through the Forum. Can anyone help with a speedo problem? I had the car serviced recently and the mechanic reported that the (electronic) cable underneath for the speedo was "in poor condition." Of course, on driving away, the speedo wasn't working! A bit of subsequent fiddling with the cable restored service, but some 500 miles later, it gradually gave up the ghost, then stopped altogether but occasionally it flickers into life. While this is very good for a limited mileage insurance policy, there are obvious disadvantages.
For other reasons I don't want to go back to the specialist to have the cable done, but other Porsche-minded friends are not sure the diagnosis is right. Has anyone had a problem with the electric cable giving up, or is it a sender problem? Any ideas?

The sender unit on 915 box is a piece of p-ss to replace; blind fredie could do it!!!!!! (Sorry Official Porsche repair centres) around 45 big ones, includes cable and connector.
Not sure on the G50 box, check-out the Bentley manual.

I had a similar problem many years ago with a 3.2. I'd check the electrical connection accessible from within the cabin under the metal plate on the floor under the carpet at the back of the tunnel.

Could be the sensor on the side of the gearbox. Its a reed switch that gets pulsed by a maget in the gearbox. Easy to replace, I've even taken one apart and replaced the reed switch inside for pennies (RS electronics sell them)

how exactly did the speedo behave when working, stopping, and stopping altogether?
The reason I ask is that if you eliminate electrical/sensor issues, it is a common fairly fault with these speedos that the cog gear will disintegrate (plastic) It goes brittle
i understand that when this happens, it is usually preceded by a very erratic jumpy needle for a period and then dead.
The cog gear is readily available and quite easy ,albeit something of a pfaff to replace.

Speedo was working quite normal with no jumping just stopped for a brief period (30 mins or so) then would work,this carried on for a few weeks but now seems to have ceased altogether,odometer also not recording.
Thanks to everyone offering suggestions.

I had the same issue and took it to Hillcrest. Response was tap it its stuck, age!
Or its a costly job.
Sometimes it comes on when the car gets to about 30mph, if not I tap it. But it doesn't seem to happen so often now.

The Speedo sensor is in A very vulnerable place ,when mine stopped agood clean with WD40 and voila that was2yrs ago
