Something i have been working on!

After going on a trackday this summer gone and seeing Mr Empsons superlightweight in action i got thinking about making a lightweight turbo....so i had to firstly source a turbo that needed a new lease of life(A turbo S without a sunroof was ideally what i was after).... so started with this...

First things first....drove the car straight to Promax for engine check(Bores fine, replaced rings, rebuilt head,Widefire, new tappets etc) so all freshened up,car runs sweet now.... more power needed....Promax chips,MBC,DPW,DV30 etc so now it is nice and quick. Next step to take a leaf from Mr Empson's book of making 944s light.... and start stripping..!(parts and body panels!),so picked up car running nice and grunty from Promax and took it straight up to EMC motorsport who i heard of on here and spoken highly of and specialise in building track/race 944s......

Also needed is a cage just incase something bad happens on track plus it stiffens the Turbo S shell, plus it means the car could be raced at some stage.....Once the cage is in Sills replaced inner/outer....car is nice and solid now..

Then some lighter body panels, could not believe how heavy the originals were compared to the glassfibre ones, especially the bonnet!(Plus corrosion of front wings is something i can now forget about[:D])

The interior is all stripped and needs painting, have to choose a new colour for the car to give it a "track" look and have always liked Maritime blue[:)]I really like the genuine carbon fibre anti scuff plates![8D]

Looks fantastic Mark - will it still be a road-legal car?

Looking forward to a passenger lap or two at Silverstone next year [:D]

Looks a nice clean job Mark. Did you do the stripping of the sound insulation yourself? If so, what method did you use? I've heard quite a few but sounds like dry ice is the least labour intense.

Nice one Mark! keep those pics coming - you have made us wait long enough for these look forward to seeing it in the flesh. [:)]

As far as spec for the rest of the car it is something like this.
Edit-forgot suspension -that will be a full on race GAZ adjustable coilovers
Seats - Cobra Suzuka pro Buckets in XL..!
Steering Wheel- Momo race with yellow band and detachable boss, will make entry and exit easier!
Harnesses- TRS 6 point in red
Brakes-Because the car will be so much lighter some race pads and extra brake ventilation should be enough, the side/fogs are to be ditched in favour of intake and little lamp.
Tyres-Toyo TR888s really like these tyres i run them on my red tuned turbo and the sidewall feels stiff, they are soft compond yet ok in standing water, plus they are cheaper than the Michelin Pilot sport cups
Cage-Saftey devices full welded in cage
Fire extinguisher -plumbed in system
Carbon door cards 964 red toggle door handle toggle
EMC found me a black dash/gear surround
Original 16 inch forged Clubsports powdercoated gloss black
Promax rear wiper delete

Car Should be in Bodyshop for final exterior paint so i will post some pics when i get to that stage.

I love it Mark. Hard to beleive its the same car that i went to see in Towcester !

Keep the pictures coming.

Thanks chaps, Car will be totally road legal if a bit noisy! No stereo might take an 80s boombox i still have,EMC stripped out the interior they did a lovely job by hand with thinners i think(not a nice job but needs to be done to get a nice finish).Really looking forward to the car being complete. It should be really light for a turbo,so should have the potential to be fairly quick hopefully......

Picture of extra wide Cobra Seats, really comfy and WIDE[:D] Although getting in and out of the car over the rollcage will be entertaining...!

What an excellent project, really look forward to seeing the end result and hearing how she behaves on the track. Will look fantastic in Maritime. [:)]

Really like the look of it MArk. I am in the process of doing the same with my 944 turbo. I already bought cobra suzukas. I am going to put carpets in mine as I use it on the road mainly (but will be doing track days). Just bought clubsports to put on it off Ed on here. Do you know what the weight saving is for the fibreglass front end?

Sorry i didn't weigh the original panels/new panels -but it will slash the weight ,i am also ditching the metal rear bumper,i will be weighing mine as soon as it is finished, hopefully it will be ready by Rutland Jan meet and you can all point and laugh as i try and get out over the roll cage..[:D]For a road car without roll cage i would not go much past GRP front wings my new front PU is made of tupperware grade plastic,or am i being crash paranoid?(mind you a cage is not good news when being driven on the road without a helmet..[&:])

Mark, great to see the old girl again (I'm a recent previous owner), was wondering what became of her, and couldn't have hoped for a better outcome. I hope you have many years of happy lappery!

What ever you do, let EMC fit these! The fun and games we had fitting my XL Corbeaus - I would happily have paid somebody else to do!
