Some Advice Please Guys & Gals, with this COVID19 and we cant drive

Hi Guys

Please excuse me, im very new to Porsche ownership, as we can no longer drive our beloved cars, what would you guys do for the long term? currently Im starting the car everyday and letting it idle until the temp gauge shows normal operating temperature then turning it off
this is probably the wrong thing to do?.....I have toyed with Idea of removing the battery but I do not have the codes for the infotainment, and im unsure what would happen if I connected the battery again?

As long as your battery is good, your car will be fine to leave for at least 2-3 weeks. I plan on leaving mine alone and just using it every 2-3 weeks to go shopping in instead of using my wife's daily driver.

Thank you for responding, regarding the battery I have been using a CTEK charger to maintain the battery as I personally do not know the age of the battery, I think I might do the same Twinfan and go shopping in the Porsche, I will replace the battery at some point when the current crisis drops sufficiently to allow me to go and get a new one

Im also wondering what happens if I do replace the battery?

Depending on your model of Cayman, I believe the more recent ones need a trip to an OPC or Indy to code the battery to the car otherwise you get warning lights/error codes/parts not working.

If you're on a CTEK there's certainly no need to start the car every day.

 
I'm a key worker so have an excellent excuse to use the weekend car through the week. If you're in South Yorkshire, I'm happy to give yours some excercise 😀

Seriously, I use a cheap battery conditioner from Amazon and have left mine at least three weeks without a problem.

OPC simply add the serial number to the computer so it is covered by the warranty. From posts on this site and others, Porsche will still exclude the battery anyway, and the car cannot tell one gel battery from another.

 
I don't believe that's the case for 981/982 series cars, the battery has to be coded to the car using PIWIS to ensure full functionality is maintained.

 
On my old 981CS, I bought a new Banner battery from Design911 and had it fitted by my Centre. They said I would get errors as they could not code it (enter a new battery and serial number into the ECU so it could run the calibration).

I had no error messages, no loss of functionality, no over or under charging of battery. Whether non-coding reduces the effectiveness of the in-use charging regime and therefore longevity of the replacement battery, I have no idea but it was still OK after 4.5 years

The car is a 987.1 Cayman S Sport, I have had to use a CTEK charger to recon the battery, I cant leave the charger on the car due to the garage being to small and having to charge on the drive, I will drop down to Cotswold Porsche and get the guys to fit a new battery for me,

By the way guys is it normal for a cayman to crank about 4 times to start??

My old 981 CGTS and current 718 GT4 fire(d) up immediately, so it sounds like your battery may well be on the way out.

 
Mmmmm I thought it might be Twinfan, not being used to the car and not knowing enough about her I did wonder, then its definitely off to get a new battery......thanks Twinfan

Assuming you don't have an OPC warranty, Halfords do a gel battery to fit my (981) Cayman S for £142 with a five year warranty. £25 for fitting. And they are still open. OPC will charge about 4X that with a two year warranty.

 
Just had a CEO message from Halfords to say they will be staying open as an essential service. Best to check their website tomorrow. Good luck [:)]

 
Running a car at idle for 20 minutes is probably not doing it any good without any load l put my CR away for 3 or 4 months in the winter with a CTEK connected up looks like it may be a little longer this year.

When ready for action I just fire it up without any problems.

 
As I had a heart Op last week I'm unable to drive for a while plus these Virus restrictions. I've purchased a Solar 40w panel + controller as I don't have access to mains power for a C-TEK, it will sit on the dashboard and comes with a lighter socket adaptor as an extra.
