Snow Driving Experience

Hi all,

Well this morning was a whiteout in Bolton and bury (Manchester) so the very early drive to work was interesting! [:D]

My Lux handled superb... very very impressed.

I thought that as soon as i came to my first corner.. all hell would break loose...but no... car was very composed and the feedback was excellent.

Even took time to have a little play on a nearby ind estate on the way home [:-]..... i was grinning from ear to ear! [:D]

I am very fortunate to drive lots of different cars on a regular basis.. and i must say it was by far the most enjoyable and predictable, not bad considering it is almost 20 years older than the others..... credit where credit is due!

The handling is predictable but I found my S2 a bit of a handful out in the countryside where I live. The road outside the house is on an incline and not being gritted I couldn't get up it last year!

My big fat tyres are far from ideal in this weather; and the car weighs a good deal less too, which only makes things worse...

Not had the pleasure of driving mine on snow yet - was in the Focus today, but I have driven it on slippey mud and it was sublime. I could hold the back end out at will and just steer the car on the throttle. So progressive and predictable - almost happens in slow motion. It'd be a different story in a mid engined car.

Though snow is very handy in confined car parks with front wheel drive cars. No need for multi-point turns to get around, just put on the hand brake, give it full lock and a boot full of throttle and just pirouette 180 degrees around your rear axle. Be prepared for some funny looks though.

And in rear drive - I have to reverse about a metre and have a second go at getting into the tight turn of my drive. But this evening when I tried to reverse the rear end just went sideways - fine, I won't bother reversing, that lined it up nicely.
