Sloppy Gear Change

Dave, you should have PM, but not sure if you've received it [&:]. Post on here if not, and I'll give you a call over the weekend about the front shifter [;)]. Phil

The postage on the website is wrong £15 5 day post and £5 next day courier .....it is a well made bit of kit
 
Is there a diagram for making your own quick shift anywhere, doesnt look all that difficult, couple of rose joints, bit of steel bar, some nylon, seen some on the web for £300, I reckon £20 - £30 and some time in the man cave would produce one that works. Has anyoen managed to replace the shift mech with the box in the car, I had a look lsst summer and it looked like a pain in the arse.
 
I've just bought a quick shift from the States to give a try. It's the Schnell type that seems to be a straight replacement and has good reviews. Cost about £40 plus shipping, and seems to be of pretty good quality, but certainly not up to the 9xx standard, I would imagine. Seemed like worth a go for the cost difference. Will feedback when I've got it fitted with the new front shifter from JMG, which is now ordered [;)]. Phil
 
I replaced the mechanism in situ when my crosslink broke. Didn't find it that difficult, but I have quite small hands and I had a spare gearbox to "see" what I was doing, Would agree the main slop is the bushes on the cross link (mine broke because it was rusted and I had been "experimenting"), so that rose jointed one looks lovely!. The plastic bush can be shimmed with beer (Boddingtons is best) can. The pin on the lever can get quite badly barrel shaped but I dont understand why it wears but the hole in the rod appears not to! The cup bush at the bottom of the lever is the least of the problem.

Phil, do you a link, a lot of the products I have seen are £200 plus, which seems rather enthusiastic for what it is, I could also do with a spare gearbox to practice on, I love fabricating stuff and my dad works in an engineering shop so can get stuff made/altered, determined to sort out the niggles this year, so getting everything prepped for when the weather improves.
 
Well, I do not want to jump in with both feet... :) Can't find where the £15 shipping came from, it should be about £5 for what is advertised as 2 to 3 day delivery in the UK, but is typically next day special delivery (we put 2 to 3 days delivery to cover ourselves in case we are late sending one out or if the courier is being a bit slow.) It could be the £15 shipping was a glitch on the website, but if anyone can recreate it, let me know and I will look into it. Also, remember, if you send us your old rear linkage (we only need the original cast iron bit that bolts to the gearbox selector shaft) we will either refund your card or send you a cheque for £25! So the breakdown is... £132 for the quickshift. £4.95 for shipping £27.49 for the VAT man a total of £164.94 delivered. Less £25 for your old linkage total cost £139.94 So remember, we have to give the vat man £27.49 for each one, and the courier takes another £4.95, which means in reality, we get about £100 for this bit of kit.. Which includes every bit made of ground and machined stainless steel, aluminium, aircraft quality rose joints (not the cheap type you get online) and composite self lubricating material for the pivot block. Actually, doing the maths.. the price might need to go up in the future, we might be making a loss!! In addition, the only re-used bit is the bit that bolts to the gear selector shaft on the side of the box, this has the pin removed, a new stainless pin fitted, and the whole assembly crack checked and shot peened... these we need because the casting or machining of new ones would push up the price by more than the refund we offer.. So we will buy old worn out rear linkages off of anyone to keep a stock of the bits we need.. So if anyone has an old shifter out there they do not want, we will buy it for £20 (£25 is a special price to thank customers who actually buy the precision shifts from us) Not wanting to advertise, just setting the record straight about the shipping costs and that some members might not realise they have a refund available to them!
 
Sorry not trying to be awkward, but £15.50 is genuinely the cheapest postage option that comes up on your website (at least for me). Here's a screen shot to prove it [;)]

I spoke to Jamie this morning, who was very helpful and he said he'd check out the postage for me, as he wasn't sure what the website was set up to say. If it's £5, as you say, I would never have commented, as that's perfectly reasonable [:)]. Phil

Bargain IMHO.......can not wait to fit it[:D]....... I think I was looking at the rate for Ireland & Shetland....[:eek:]
 
Ohhh... now that makes sense! Thats the front shift, I have been scouring the precision, race and road shifts for the problem Think I know what is up, I think the weight has been put in as being something like 5kg rather than 0.5kg (for example) on that one item... Will investigate and rectify, should be only £5 or less for shipping on the front shifts, thanks for letting me know about this! Of course also the front shifts are a remanufactured item again, so there is a refund for when we get your old worn out one back! :)
 
Iv'e got a JMG short shift kit fitted to my turbo and,it's an excellent bit of kit (once it's warm) and well worth the money. Buy British! That's what i say [8D][:D].

Is it baulky when the tranmission is cold? I suppose that this is the price that you pay for a shortened trhow, which can only be partly mitigated through careful design and high quality fittings...
 
Problems I've had with the gear linkage - both original parts on the the car I believe. The first one was shortly after I got the car, the gear change was horrible, so I stripped it and pulling the rather seized shaft out of the plastic bush, this happened -

Easily fixed thanks to Elliott. I also then swapped the gearbox I then tried other ways of bushing the crosslink but this led to the failure here-

So Jons lovely rose joints look really good to me, but mine is currently a s/h but ok one!

Well, that was fun.... Got the linkage off, didnt go without a fight, the stabiliser bar took ages to undo the bit that connects to the gearbox I had to cut with a junior hacksaw as it wasnt going anywhere despite half a tin of plusgas and hitting it with a blowtorch, had to remove the exhaust backbox, nothing as much fun as 22 year old nuts and bolts. Found some new rust under the battery at the bottom, going to be a busy summer for me and my mig ! There was quite a bit of play in the linkage and the rubber suppers on the stabiliser are a bit soft so that might not be helping and introducing slop, supect there maybe a little trial and error to get the change spot on.
 
Have got the new linkage, seems ok, have made a new support from 2 Rose joints, some nuts and a length of threaded bar (looks better than it sounds), similar to some examples i have seen on the web, not fitted it yet but am concerned that the support may make the side to side movement in the gear lever a bit sloppy, where does the change get its spring and self centering from the rubbers support or the garbox itself ? Guess all will become apparent when I fit it
