Sloppy Gear Change

Highwayman

One of the jobs left to sort on my 944 before Bedford is to improve the rather sloppy gear change. Now it looks like this could just be down to wear on the front and rear linkages, but I'd also like to shorten it a little, so what are my options?

I've been doing a little research online this evening, and it appears that JMG offer an uprated gear lever and ball cup bush, or I could opt for a straight standard replacement, or the 968 (strengthened) option. The rear options seem to be JMG's 9xx short-shift kits, which I'm sure are good but are quite pricey, or a Schnell kit. The latter only seems to be available to order from the States, but is half the price of the 9xx kit, even accounting for shipping costs. Anyone any idea if this is avialable through a UK supplier?

Any suggestions or recommendations welcome...

Phil

I was looking at this earlier as I have a replacement ball joint cup already and was about to order a new front shifter but the postage was £18!!!! Anyone live near JMG who fancies buying one and shipping it to me and I'll square up with them??? D9 do one for £170 too http://www.deutschnine.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=porsche-transaxle&Product_Code=D9-944II951S2-SSK-106-01-002&Category_Code=porsche-transaxle-944-turbo-s2-tuning-handling

Yes, I wasn't taken with their postage rates either much [&:]. I actually don't live that far away from them, and might be able to pursuade a work colleague who lives in the same town to drop by and pick one up for me. Could help you out as well, if you're interested [;)]. Phil

If you would, that'd be great thanks. I'd say "PM me" but it's not working! BTW - at the bottom of the postage rates is an option for "edge of the Milky Way" or something similar, click it and see what that does to the rates, lol.

Jon had posted up on Tipec and also on his web site there's a long write up about the gear linkage kits they've done, just in case you missed it. You also get some money back for returning some of your own parts too. I'll stop stating the obvious now! [:D] Cheers Andy

Yes, I tried that as well! They don't allow an option of no postage, so may need to phone them to place an order. I'll have a chat with my colleague tomorrow and see if he would be amenable to helping us out [;)]. I'm probably only looking at the front shifter and bush from them anyway. Thanks for the tip on D9, that may be worth a look, but I seem to recall that they had some 'delivery issues' previously, and I know that they took an age to send my strut brace, so am a little nervous about using them. Anyone know if things have improved with them of late? Phil

Thanks Andy, I read the Tipec thread and the articles hence wanting to order one. Hopefully Phil's mate will be amenable to picking a couple up. No experience with ordering from D9 but they weren't exactly quick to respond to emails in the past.

Yes, thanks Andy. I had spotted that, which is what had got me thinking... I am tempted with the RoadShift, but the Schnell seems to get good write ups in the States, and it is half the price. Does anyone actually have experience with any of the options I mentioned? Phil

I have the JMG modified gear lever and road version quick shift. I am very happy with the resulting shift - a night and day improvement over the previous very sloppy shift. It is a bit notchy and changing from second to first can be tricky when cold but soon loosens up once warmed up a bit. obviously I have never compared mine to a new Porsche unit though, which would no doubt also be a dramatic improvement over a worn 20+ year old setup. I will be at Bedford and you are welcome to try it there (in the pit lane that is [:D]) though it sounds like you want to do something sooner...

Depending upon how much you want to spend and how bad the situation is, you may want to deal with the front bit (gearlever) first. The pin in the side of it wears to an oval and introduces a lot of slop into the mechanism. For not much more than a few quid you can make a new pin out of some stainless bar and fit the 968 nylon bushes into the connection rod that runs to the rear of the car. I did this a few months back for the sum cost of a fiver or so and the result is a much tighter, more 'engineered' feel to the gearshift - £5 or so and a couple of hours well spent. Interestingly, the nylon cup at the bottom of the gearlever wasn't worn at all so was introducing no extra slop to the system. Next step has to be to tackle the back of the car, but I am firmly of the opinion that there is a lot of improvement possible without spending money on those kits. Part of the problem is that the linkage is hard to get to and you need to drop the transmission to see what's what. However last time I had mine down I noticed that much of the slop was from the locating link (part 29 in the picture) and replacing it with some small rose joints would improve things greatly.

There will be wear elsewhere on other bushes and the whole system is not ideal, but it makes sense to me to tackle the easy bits and return it to as-new tolerances before spending money on 'upgraded' parts. I'm hoping to do some more on this sometime this spring and will do a DIY thread on it if anyone is interested. Oli.

Oli, sounds interesting. I've already got a replacement cup that given to me by a friend so will change it while I'm in there as a matter of course. I figured it can't be hard to get an engineering firm to replace the pin or even a garage to weld a replacement on but what are the 968 bushes of which you speak??? Part numbers, pictures and a Haiku please ;)

Transfer rod. To back of car. No bushes on pin in 944. Bushes on pin in 968. Retrofit 968 bushes to 944. (http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=475449)

There was a guy doing the plastic joint on e-bay for around £25 last year.He was making them out of something harder. They looked really good but I cant find them any more although I thing I posted a link to it. I'll have a look back and see if I can find it.

Eldavo - Spoken to my colleague, who is happy to help. Let me know what it is you wanted to order, and I'd be happy to organise things. Might be easiest for me to place an order for both of us, and then I'll post you the parts at cost ;) . Is PM or e-mail working yet? If so, drop me your contact details. Phil
