Skid awareness training 2009

Julie Knox has been making some enquires into this together with the Institute of Advanced Motorists. It all revolves (no pun intended) around getting enough folks together to make it affordable. At the minute if we had 18 of us taking part it would be around £48 per head for a one on one 90 min session which I don't think is to bad [] it would be on a weekend and hopefully we could get TIPEC involved too, Simon......

No dates as yet as we want to see if the interest is there, what do you think?

Interested too dependant on venue and time of year. Would this be in our own cars?

We would try to get the use of a LA car park so venue would be dependant on co-operation of LA's. Hartlepool did provide one for the IAMs last session so I know they would likely be up for it.
Timing would be dependant on availability of car park and folks but hopefully sometime next spring (Nick?).
They provide the car and the instruction. The car is modified so that you get the awareness and experience of different situations.
The company is called Driving Dynamics and have a webiste which would give you a little more information if you're interested?
I think it would be really good fun and great training for the unexpected!

to try to keep costs down i'm looking to see if the IAM want to take some places. If we could get 18 between us it would be about £41 each. We could take up to 24 which would bring the cost down but I don't know if we can muster that many.
I am hoping to get the use of a Local Authority car park somewhere in T&W, Durham or Tees Valley unless one of you knows of a private company (maybe someone works somewhere) who would be willing to let us have the use of it on a Saturday or Sunday?
I am aiming to try to sort it out for sometime in April. If we could get a better idea of the numbers we could muster it would really help.

Just to give a bit more info about what the training involves see below:​

Skid recognition and avoidance training is an essential element of any driver's​

development. We do instruct drivers how to correct a skid but we believe it is far​

more important that a driver can recognise when a skid is likely to develop and drive accordingly. This can only be fully appreciated if a driver has experienced the​

sensation of a skid developing.​

Our skid training packages therefore include instruction in​

Recognising the causes​

Appreciation and understanding of recent developments in vehicle design​

How to correct a​

Front wheel skid​

Rear wheel skid​

4 wheel skid​

Importance of vehicle maintenance​

Our training vehicle​

We are proud to have a state of the art hydraulically operated, computerised "skid​

car".​

The car, a specially converted Renault Megane, operates on any tarmac or concrete area without causing damage or leaving any signs of use. There is no noise from the vehicle other than the normal engine noise associated with a running vehicle and at all times the vehicle is under the total control of the instructor. As an added precaution the vehicle it is fitted with dual controls.​

The car itself has an automatic gearbox and can be equipped with hand controls for​

use by disabled drivers.​

We believe the car is a valuable tool for driver development and whilst our courses​

are enjoyable we do not use the vehicle for stag parties or fun days

Surely this is valuable training for all drivers, not just RWD or Porsche based. Im sure we could get good numbers

Julie has worked hard on trying to sort this out, so much so that we are changing the company that we were looking at, the site is here (not great I grant you but it covers what you need to know),

Now the chap who runs it can do a full day for £55 per person including a buffet lunch and can take a maximum of 12 people and we are looking to hold it on Sunday the 19th of April.

Its ran on a disused air field, he takes 3 people a time in the car and has said that he would also cone off an area for the others waiting who could do runs in their own cars etc.

I will need a £10 deposit per person, the first deposits taken will count, I will be taking these at our next meet on Wednesday the 11th of March or before hand if you would like to contact me.
