Side skirts.........

Afternoon all.

Been doing the resto of the rear sills on my car (well one side was done 18 months back, and other side is to be done Jan/Feb as the car has been stored in the meantime), and got to thinking about side skirts. As I'll have to have paint, rather than paint the full quarter/side to get a match, I quite like the look of 'some' of the side skirts and think this will be an ideal time to change now everything will be solid and can be covered with the knowledge there's nothing lurking behind.

Post 21 & 29 in the following Rennlist discussion shows the style I'm after :

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/157349-944-951-side-skirts-euro-style-anyone-have-them-pics-2.html

Does anyone know of any suppliers this side of the pond ? I can find them in USA for half sensible money (£150 ish plus shipping/import etc.), but thought I should exhaust all avenues here before shipping stuff half way around the world. I think Deutschnine did this style at some point, but now only show the 968 style on their website.

So, who has moulds lurking in the shed...........[:D]

Cheers,

Mike

Club autosport do some. I think. I dont like the look of the boxey ones but the smooth ones with holes in them look smart

Hi Mike,

I agree the ones you mentioned are really nice, if you manage to find out where to get them i would be interested as well. I know a lot of people will disagree though

Gavin

Well we can't all drive concours can we? It'd be boring haha. No luck so far Gavin, Club Autosport don't do them. I guess it'd help with shipping from the states if there were several of us ?

If anyone has any other leads, let me know. Alternatively if there's anyone who has a set I can take some moulds from them and make you a new set (plus a little compensation of course) ? Then we'll have them available for future too [:)]

Olli from the Rennlist thread is the same Olli (Os951) that posts on here. Suggest you ask him directly - he could perhaps help you out there. I am not a fan of the sill covers (box ones) but those ones you make reference to look quite nice.

I like the dp motorsport ones but to be honest after owning a 968 I have gone right off all side skirts. I look at my race car and its side profile is clean and nice. Personally I wish the 968 didn't have them.

Sorry lads very Halfords IMO, leave as Porcshe intended, see that Autograph "Specialist" cars in West Yarkshire have loads of prime examples for sale at top dollar, all seem to be fitted with sill extensions.
I wonder why, they must like the look.......................yeah righto []

Each to their own, I wouldn't suggest how anyone else should have theirs [8|]

Plenty of nice modified examples on rennlist, they don't have to be standard to look good. It's odd how everyone seems unanimous in the opinion that more power/engine mods/kw v3 is perfectly acceptable, but things like this aren't ?

I'm not putting neon lights underneath it lol, its a period copy part from a period tuner/styling house.........

Cheers,

Mike

Have you tried Pro 9 ? I bought a set of 968 style skirts from him and they are very good and also well made. And on the subject of skirts body kits etc ,I am building my car for me .I like the look of 968 skirts and bridge spoiler on a 944.So I don't care if others don't like it cause it's mine and I built it myself for myself and not for anyone else.

Cheers Colin, i'll check that out.

Like you say, its your car/my car and our money so we should be building them as we see fit [8D]

Personally, I like the boxy type that everyone else seems to hate, so that's what I'm fitting to my car in the spring to cover up the untidy but very solid replacement sills. [:)]

I love them, they are an original design and suit the Lux in the same way the toast-rack does. They do have a bad reputation as so many were used to hide rusty sills, but as it's so easy to see the inside of the sill what's the problem? [:)]

Hi Colin, quite right to do what you like. I am in I guess a very narrow minority in that I like the look of some side skirts, I have just gone off them from a practical point of view.

The 968 rear PU though is absolutely awesome and that with the flush rear quarter windows really makes the 968.

I really like the 968 rear pu.But if I was going to go that far I should just buy a 968 .The flush rear windows are also better looking in my opinion.I am currently working on opening rear windows and when done they will sit flush with the body.I am going to use a larger pane of glass and a mechanism similar to that on a ka or an old mini in order to get the windows to open at the rear.No practical reason for doing this just want to,to see if it can be done.If I crack it (pardon the pun) then I will do a how to and try to put some kits together.

I wouldn't have fitted them myself but the 2.7 came with them , for the same reason I think!

The practicality of it though is brilliant. I used to have this feature on both my old mini and the old Saab 900. It dragged a lot of air through the cabin and really helped on warm days. Also doesn't seem to create as much noise as opening a sunroof although granted no one will know what it is like on a 944 until you try.

Personally I would have preferred the 944/968 to have a solid roof and these hinged flip out quarter windows as it would have made for a better overall sports car.

M3 E46 models have them. They have an electric mechanism so may be worth trying to see if there are any bits available secondhand for them. Could be easily rigged up to another sunroff rocker switch,

OK, so to give this one a kick to the top..........................

Still struggling to find anything in Europe for these at a reasonable price, anyone any further ideas or leads ?

Anyone up for joining on sharing shipping costs if I got some from the USA ?

Cheers,

Mike
