short shifter:cutting the original???

Hi.

What is the difference between the short shifter kits and the original stick? The travel is shorter, but how is it acheived?

I was wondering to cut the original shifter just 1" shorter (I don´t like the looks of the original one, it looks too long).

Is it a crazy idea? I did a similar thing many years ago for my Pontiac Fiero...

AFAIK the bit that sticks out the bottom from the pivot point is slightly longer so doesn't have to travel so far to cover the same distance when operating the cables.

In theory chopping a bit off the top end should have the same effect if my school trigonometry was right??? The gearknob is a push fit and the last few inches of the stick has flat sides, which would need to be replicated if you want a proper fix (rather than drill out the gearknob and araldite it on).

The original is nice to use & the short shift is NOT. Why on earth would you want a short shift kit in a Boxster I don't know. If you want to go faster invest in some driver training, a set of track day tyres or almost anything else.
 
Well, personally I don´t like the feel of the original stick, the ergonomics doesn´t fit well (at least for me, being quite small in size).

The idea is not to be any faster, but rather a bit more comfortable...

I´ve been shifting the gears holding the stick a bit lower and haven´t experienced any problems.
