Servicing ?

New member
In reading some of the early posts it is clear that we need to try and figure out the sort of topic that is ideal for this forum, as Bluebottle has indicated we need to decide whats appropriate....it seems to me that as a start this is GB orientated so let me kick off with a GB only question.....[8|]

I bought my car back in March last year and its coming round to the time for a service and MOT. I live in Northampton and other than the local OPC what in the members opinions are my best options within reasonable travelling distance?

Thanks in advance

Hi, now thats an interesting question for this PCGB forum, because I don' t know if we can " advertise" other then OPC services on the Club forum. We must ask the Administrator.

Ken

WoW....Ken, thats gonna make this a pretty damn dry forum if that is indeed the case.

Im not sure it would be advertising anyway...what Im looking for is recommendations. I would have thought that one of the main purposes of a forum is to share opinions and advice. Pointing owners in the direction of recommended vendors and advising against disreputable ones would in my mind be a key benefit.

Hi Mark,

I also live in Northampton so maybe I can help. I' ve received no harsh directives regarding advertising in my role as 944 Moderator so I will play devils advocate and risk a slapping! [8D]

I' ve used the local OPC when I first bought my S2 5 years ago and had no problems with them but then attended an inter region PCGB Chiltern Region Go Kart evening and met Jonas the owner of JZ Machtech near Watford. I have used them ever since and been very impressed. I know quite a few of the 964 owners on the Titanic 964 forum have used them also.

A more local Independant is Charles Marsland who owns Auto 2000 in Bedford I met him at a PCGB Lake District Weekend two years ago (and Ken too) and he drove a lovely 964. Charles is highly recommended by at least three local 944 owners and a 911 Turbo owner from the Northants Region.

Hope this helps

Paul

OK I' m with you. Providing we recommend and do not criticize dealers and/or vehicle suppliers. I personally see nothing wrong with listing suppliers (inc garages) from whom one has received good service.[8|]

I have now received an " official" thumbs up on this. So away we go with lots of tech talk ( hopefully)[:D]

Rule 4 covers this one it' s quite clear:

4 Advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, SPAM, virus warnings and solicitations are not permitted. If you are a representative of a company making a product or offering a service being discussed in the forums, please feel free to participate in the discussion, as long as your response is solely designed to respond to a question about that product or service in the PCGB forums. Do not post announcements about your company' s products or services, or otherwise use the PCGB forums to bring attention to your product or service, in a manner that could be even loosely construed as promotion or advertising. Personal for sale postings are acceptable, only as long as they are an individual member/owner selling his/her personal car or accessories, and the message is posted in the appropriate forum.

I understand Rule 4.
But the above quote still stands. Thou shalt not criticize !

Sorry Ken[&o], my post should have been for Paul in response to his post quote above.

Thanks Guys,

I think this type of thread is going to be invaluable to us all.

As for JZ....I have had a lot of good reports and I am swinging in that direction, I guess I was hoping that someone knew somewhere a little nearer to home

With no traffic on the M1 (yeah right) [8|] it only takes 40 mins to get there. We try to time it for when the children are off school then spend the day in London, a real day trip just to service the car [:D] and there' s a nice Italian restaurant just around the corner for a good meal before the journey home.

I' ll be there in two weeks for the Turbo, and a month later for the S2, I' d better get the credit card out.

Hi Ken,

Good luck with the 3rd brakelight, as you know I' m as happy as larry with mine, I' ve also been out and bought clear indicators and side repeaters.
Then I decided to treat myself to the 993RS steering wheel, which IMHO is a vast improvement over the original non airbag type. Pictures as usual on my website.

Let me know when yours is completed, and I' ll come visit for lunch.

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Welcome to the forum.

Autostrasse are supplying and fitting my third brake light. I think it will be the Hoop, spoiler type. Your style of the top window fitting isn' t available for the Targa I' m told.

How did you get on going to work (Stanstead) in the big freeze up last week[&:]

Best wishes,
Ken.

P S.,I have just put a message on to titanic for you, regard to meeting up for lunch.

Hi Ken,

Getting to work wasn' t the problem, I couldn' t get home, that was more the issue.
I ended up helping out the nightshift guys, then doing my normal shift. All in all 35hrs non-stop. Thank heavens it dosen' t snow often.
Read the titanic email regarding lunch, sounds like a fine idea.

Mark, Looking back at your posting of last week,(seems like an age back, perhaps it is in cyber time) That we really haven' t had a lot of positive replies to your question of using a local specialist to carry out the servicing on your car. Hope we get a few more answers to this.

Thinking about Servicing in general, I often wonder if I should spend the money out on a regular Annual Service, when my mileage is only around 5000 per year. What do you think ? a simple Oil change, but then as I use Mobile 1, is even a oil change really required. I would appreciate your views.

Ken,

Actually the first response indicated JZ and that was where I was thinking of going anyway....in fact Ill probably arrange this in the next few days....I did here they get booked up well in advance.

Me too !....I only managed about 3,000 miles since the last service and it sure seems like an overkill, but maybe its just the piece of mind of having a specialist look your pride and joy over and get it set for another year.

A simple oil change would save a lot o dosh !.....do you think the lack of a service stamp every year matters ?

Ken

I appreciate the need not to slander, but I have had particularly bad experiences with one ' independant - specialising in Porsche' , and would not wish to have anyone else meet with similar. I also know several other PCGB members who have similar negative views of this particular operators seeming incompetance and unreliability. That coupled with the fact that I bought my car on the basis that it was supplied with a 12 month insured warranty, and that the warranty company know nothing about it...

I recently switched to G-Force-Motorsport on yet another members advice and am awaiting the completed work to determine how I feel about them - so far so good though - except that I' m having to spend £1200 which shouldn' t have been necessary due to the previously mentioned person(s).

Are you sure you don' t want them named? This isn' t slander - it' s history.

Hi Charles,
Sorry to hear of your problems, I am sure that you will be very happy with
G-Force.

If other Members want to avoid the particular trader who hasn' t given you the service that you expected, I suggest that they contact you " Off Forum"

Please tell us about any " Specials" that G-Force are doing to your car.

Rgds
Ken

Charles,

Can you email me directly ...mhardy@ra.rockwell.com.....with details of your bad experience so I do not fall into the same trap.

Incidentally when I bought my car last March the dealer gave me a warranty and so far he has been excellent !

Mark

Hi Ken,

G-Force are putting in the Sports Exhaust (+12 bhp), and the hot film sensor and ECU remap (+50 bhp). Total cost around £1400 inclusive, which is about the most power you can get for the least money, taking the stock 250bhp to around 300/310bhp. You can build up to 335bhp if you spend large sums on the 3.8L upgrade, but for another 20 to 30hp, it' s a lot of cash (about £8000).

My car is already putting out 221bhp at the wheels (which is about 270bhp - standard 964 is around 203bhp at the wheels from 250bhp), so someone' s already had a go at it, but I have no paperwork and G-Force are going to take a look to see if the exhaust or ECU has been modified before. Even so I still expect to pick up 30-40hp and an additional 50Nm torque. Given power to weight I should be able to out pace a 964 Turbo ... we' ll see when I get it back!!

The guys at G-Force (particularly Chris, my Australasian advisor) have been extremely helpful, knowledgable, and so far I' m very pleased that I chose them. How pleased will obviously have to wait until I get my car back. If it' s of interest, I' ll keep you posted.

- Charles
