Sensors

Hi All,

I have taken off my intake manifold and noticed some broken wires going to a sensor at the back of the engine. From what i can tell it is a sensor not sure if it is speed sensor or mark refernce sensor. The question I have is that everything i have seen says there should be two sensors but i only have the one is this wrong or does it depend on the model of 944. Mine is a 944S 1987.

I think the twin cam engines only have the one sensor on the back on the engine and the other is replaced by one near the dizzy.

The S2 16V certainly only has a speed sensor on the flywheel and a cam position sensor instead of the reference sensor on the flywheel. Not sure if this innovation also applies to the S though. I can't see why not. Any chance of some pics mate?

so it is possible then that the one is correct and the second one is replaced by the hall sensor on the distributor, this is a picture of the sensor

Absolutely correct the hole you see at the back is where the other sensor sits on 8V engines. The sensor you have looks in poor condition though. The wire has been kinked and the shield has failed. Eventually the sensor fails because the wires inside will become broken too. This is quite often the case for them to get kinked because of their location. I am amazed you can get that clear a photograph. You should try navigating round the back end of a turbo. You need to be a contortionist or a very small boy []

Hi Rob,
yes i am going to replace it the only reason i can get a good picture is that I have taken the inlet manifold off to get sand blasted and and coated at the same time as my calipers. Have had the car almost a year and still lots todo to get it up and running how i want it to be. I am not very mechanical so it is lots of pictures and pray it goes back correctly.

Thinking of replacing the wiring harness as well as it is in poor condition.

Yeah I think Elliot should be able to help you out as I suggested. He's a good guy. The best way to learn mate is to get stuck in. If you get stuck you always have this place to turn to and a truly excellent forum it is. There's no rocket science on these cras even though they are Porsches.

welcome to the forum ! Just to reiterate Andy and Rob's comments, although these cars are Porsches and originally were very expensive, they're still just 4 stroke engines and are actually (once you get a level of familiarity with them) quite straightforward.

I know it sounds like the bleeding obvious, but I always find that taking lots of digital photos before tackling a job is a great reference source.
