Selling my 1988 944S

Mr.FixitNorm

After several months of difficult deliberation I've decided to sell my car. I've had her for nearly four years now but over the last 6 months I've driven her less and less and I've always believed these cars work better when they're driven regularly. Part of the reason for its lack of use is that my wife doesn't drive and relies on me to take her anywhere, she has always had issues with her back and legs but things have gradually got worse and although she won't admit it, getting in and out of the Porsche is much harder than it used to be.

Along with work commitments and fairly major decorating / repair work needed on the house, I simply don't have time to drive her or give her the attention she deserves, and sitting on the drive gathering dust and bird poo is not what she was meant for !

I've put together a bit of a time line of things she's had done since I've owned her, it doesn't seem as much as some of you but I've tried to keep on top of any work that needed doing. I don't think it's an exhaustive list but hopefully it will give anyone interested in buying her a idea of her condition.

I will be taking some pics of her at the weekend (weather permitting ) to add to this post, and will take any pictures asked of by interested parties. I'm currently reviewing the price subject to sorting the stalling issue and Ewan's interest.

She's got an MOT till December this year and the Tax has just been renewed till end of November

Please bear with me if I've left anything out, I've tried to be as honest as possible including anything I think needs attention. At the moment she's only up for sale on here as it would be nice for her to go to someone on the forum.

My timeline:

Work that's been done since I've owned the car. ( May 2009 - 118,729miles )

June 2009 - replace broken front foglight with good s/h one + new brighter headlight bulbs, new Bosch platinum battery.,

July 2010 - cut rust out of inner and outer part of near side rear sill + wax oil inner and outer underneath of sills

August 2010 - replace front wheel bearings - inner & outer

September 2010 - new rear hatch lock seal

March 2011 - new cam & balance belts, rollers, guides & tensioners. Replace rear handbrake shoes, strip clean check and refit rear CV joints ( 126,113miles )

November 2011 - new rear tyres ( Falken ZE912, 255/40x17 )

January 2012 - new cam box gasket, plug seals, distributed cap. New front ARB bushes and drop links

February 2012 - new front tyres ( Falken ZE912, 205/50x17 )

May 2012 - new sunroof seal ( genuine one ) bought and fitted in June to replacement sunroof

June 2012 - good s/h sunroof from forum member which is in better condition paint wise than mine. Replace engine temp sensor.

July 2012 - replace leaking radiator with good s/h one

November 2012 - replace torn rear seat squab with perfect s/h one

December 2012 - passed the MOT , third year running without any major issues !

May 2013 - Replaced both bonnet gas struts with genuine OEM ones from Frazerpart

May 2013 - stripped, cleaned and adjusted the AFM as per Clarkes garage and this seems to have cured the random stalling at idle issue ! 200 miles covered since doing it and it's not stalled once!

Current mileage, 128,000

Looking for £2650 Ono

Forgot to add originally that car was Promax chipped by previous owner, not sure if there's more than one type but he said it made the car ' smoother' to drive !

In the time I've owned the car I've done just under 10,000miles, the oil and filter have been changed 3 times ( last time approx 1,000miles ago ) front wipers changed twice, sun visor clips replaced, managed to get the non working tyre compressor working, not brilliantly but it does work ! The tool roll is with it along with the sunroof bag.
Everything works electrically ( well, 2/3rds of the rear window heater lines ) I did manage to break the trip meter, although the mileometer still works, as does the clock !

There's a good bit of history from previous owners but I suspect some of it is missing from the earlier years

These are the thing which could do with attention.

Headlining has shrunk back from the sunroof aperture and could do with replacing

Rear interior roof trim panel needs replacing - warped / mended / warped again

Door mirrors are quite stone chipped and could do with re-spraying ( been meaning to do this since day one ! )

Rear interior pillar trims are a bit untidy at the rear edge - need sorting or replacing.

The bodywork overall is quite good, it does have a few stone chips and marks and there is a tiny bit of rust on the very front edge of the drivers side sill, although the MOT tester seemed to think it was only a little bit of surface flaking of the stone chip material.

Hope this is all helpful, as I said I'll post pics up at the weekend to show the good and not so good ! ( picture in my sig is from about 3 years ago but she doesn't look much different ! )

If anyone is interested they can email or PM me and I'll do my best to answer any questions

Thanks for looking.

Norm

Wow sounds a bargain to me Norm.
But I would say that I suppose as its identical to mine! [;)]
I think you should aim a bit higher though, see what others think.

Have to agree thats cheap. I looked at a B reg one over East Harling way that had box sill covers fitted and a poor respray and that was £2250

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, must admit a couple of people at work ( ageing petrol heads like me ) thought it should be more like £2300 ish , but I thought it was too much. To be perfectly honest, I paid £2650 for her 4 years ago and I reckon I've spent between £1800-£2000 on her in that time.

I'll leave the price as it is for now and see if I get any offers, if not I may post it on PH with a 'revised' price !

You've got me thinking now that too lower price and people may think there's something major wrong with it, fact is I think she's a good reliable motor, if I had to do, say, a 200mile round trip in her tomorrow I wouldn't do anything more than check the oil and top up the tank!

Norm

Sorry to hear your selling up Norm, but that price is way, way to low, you got to be looking at £2800 - £3400

Yep, think you are underselling it there, that is more serviceable Lux money, would agree with Andy and say £3000 would be more appropriate, certainly late twos.

I know it's a hassle but I'd recommend sorting the idle/stall issue then going for nearer £3k :)

Agreed. If it's a case of even a couple of hours with an indie then it's going to add real value, whereas selling a car with something that's an "unknown" to a buyer will only put them off.

We often comment on ads where the seller states "problem with X, but it's a simple and cheap fix", and the view is always "if it's simple and cheap why not get it done?". [:)]

What colour and material is the interior? I used to have a guards red 944S with black pinstripe interior and would love another.

Please send some exterior and interior pictures to me at ewan@coppercoat.com

I'm in a bit of a quandary now, the general consensus is that I'm selling way too cheap , but Ewan has shown an interest in it.

Paul and Dunc, with regards to the stalling problem I'm only going by what I've researched on here and what the owner of my local garage has said. I would have liked to tackle the job myself but the weather has been so cold and with no garage to get her in I haven't been able to work on it outside.

I was hoping that the problem would be nothing more than the ICV but of course it may be something else.

If no one objects I think the fairest thing I can do at the moment is to send Ewan the pictures he's requested, and if he wants the car at my original price I'll stand by it, if he's not interested I'll remove the current price pending further investigation of the stalling issue, if I can get it fixed, the rest of the jobs are more cosmetic than anything, I can then post a more realistic price which will still, in all probability be a good buy.

If anyone thinks this is unfair or can come up with a better solution please let me know, as the last think I want to do is upset anyone.

Norm

Ewan - will send pictures tomorrow evening once I've had a chance to clean her

Andy,

Thanks for that, I feel a bit of an idiot really, I should have probably took some advice or got someone else on here to pass an opinion on her before putting my advert up.

Hopefully others will think as you do !

Regards,

Norm

stalling might be a failing temp sender - only a £10 bosch part but the isv sounds favourite.

Yes, that was my first though when it started last year, I changed it but sadly it didn't cure it, looks like the ICV is my best bet, hopefully I can clean it as I think they're quite dear ( and also different to the 8v version according to clarkes garage )

Re your stalling problem, I had exactly this some years ago on a Vauxhall SRI...a local specialist keeps a book of simple fixes, and their advice was that if something on the intake side was gummed up then Redex Injector Cleaner might clear it. Well it did, so following the instructions (double dose to clean things out) solved the problem for less than a tenner. Worth a try.

I've used it on my S2 and it ran much better after the first tankful of dosed fuel.

BTW I agree, you're selling far too cheap. The only 944s that are only worth less than £2k are the sheds that have had no mainenance...yours should fetch much more (911 & PW are talking up the 944 again this month...good for them).

Hi Graham,

I tried this today after I'd cleaned her and took the pics, I half filled the tank and put enough in for a full tank ( or poss bit more ! ) , I then took her out for a 30 mile "spirited" [8|] drive, followed by a lot of round town junction stops, result ... It didn't stall once ! .... It' s too early to tell just from a short run like that but certainly is an interesting result.

Here's hoping .....

Quick update,

Ewan has decided to pass on my car due to distance involved ( 500 mile / 10hr round trip ) , can't say I blame him! So I'm reverting to plan B which is to sort the stalling problem and possibly one or two of the other minor issues, then if all goes well, I'll post a new slightly more realistic price.

I'd just like to thank you all for the constructive comments, if anyone's interested in her in the mean time, please e-mail me. Depending on how much it costs to fix the stalling issue, at the moment, I'm guessing the revised price will be around £2350 - £2500.

I've put pictures up on my website www.thatsmypicture.co.uk , I'll add some more showing inside sills through the door vents as soon as I can.

Cheers,

Norm

That's a nice looking car. I still think you're pitching it low at £2,500. That's "decent Lux" money, not "decent S".
