SC Restoration

I am currently in the midst of a total restoration of my 1979 Sc which was purchased in 2016 as a partially dismantled project. This car had an engine fire in 1991 & been in one of my neighbours garages since. A good solid shell with very little corrosion apart from the engine compartment & inner wings where rust was evident! The engine was stripped into boxes, with some replacement parts 'thrown in'.
Much of the interior was badly damaged, although a lot of replacement items were also supplied. I will post more details when I have uploaded more pictures. Hopefully it should be on the road in 2021....... but I thought 2019 was the year it would be ready!

My goodness. That certainly is a labour of love, and worth every hour spent, I’m sure. Well done ??

Wow, this one is not for the faint hearted and fair play to you for taking it on, really looking forward to see it brought back to life !!!
(should call this thread the phoenix rise from the ashes ??).

Funny you should say that because the new colour is 'Phoenix Red' which was a VW colour but also used by Porsche on the 914/916.The car was originally 'Mocha Black' a very dark non metallic brown, but the car had been painted twice more in a metallic brown so a lot of paint to remove! The rolling shell was finally finished & painted in Jan 2020, so all the rest down to me!

Well done, mine was restored professionally, wasn't particularly bad in the first place and it was still away for 4 years two weeks and 1 day. Don't beat yourself up about not being ready by 2019!

By the way if anyone wants to know who took so long to do so little work you're welcome to PM me.

Great project -- looking forward to the updates! Was the engine damaged very badly by the fire?

The top of the engine was burnt to the extent of melting all the injection system, the left cam cover was melted & part of the crankcase & a timing cover distorted, but repaired as per the picture. All of the injection system was replaced with an 1983 complete system which came with the car but also had a total overhaul & re-calibration. The engine had a total rebuild by 'Unit 11' near Warrington in 2018. Water damage had ruined the nikasil lining on the barrels so all were redone using the original pistons with new rings, bearings, timing chains & covers, a new intermerdiate shaft was fitted due to corrosion etc, etc. Gearbox also stripped & overhauled. So the engine & box should be now as new!

Yes there was plenty of welding & fabrication to do. New rear quarters, sills, kidney bowls, rear panels plus some fabrication to the rear inner wings & engine compartment. All the rear end was glass/soda blasted at the body shop of Neil Rainger in Knowsley who did all the body work & painting. It was away for 2.5 years but what a fantastic job, the quality or workmanship & attention to details was unreal!

I take it you are restoring exactly as it was (apart from the colour) ?
Hope we will get a chance to see it on a few official club gathering in 2021....

Not quite. The car came with a full interior in black from a 1986/7 3.2 some of which I will use. The car was 'tan' throughout so I am retaining the dashboard, door cappings & rear trims below the windows. So Black sport seats in leather with cloth 'script' pattern, black door cards, rear shelf & carpets. Headlining is now black as opposed to original cream colour. All could be reversible in the future. Engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes will all be original. It is a matching numbers vehicle.
