Safety Recall

I called my OPC today to see whether a safety recall had been completed (MY88 951 fuel line) on my car. It had, although it took twenty minutes on the telephone before I found out, having been told initially that there wasnt a recall!

Anyway, I have an outstanding 'front axle inspection' (which I havent been able to identify further), so I am recommending that everyone calls their local OPC and enquires about their own car. All you need is the VIN.

Below is the suspension recall detail. Presumably this was a batch problem on 1988 cars only - interesting conversation to be had: "Well, they have been fine for 25 years but they might crack and fall apart ANY MINUTE NOW"...then you'll be sorry."

Recall Date: AUG 10, 1989
Model Affected: 1988 Porsche 944
Summary: THE ALLOY A-ARMS MAY HAVE A MANUFACTURING CASTING DEFECT AND COULD CRACK AND BREAK AFTER MILEAGE ACCUMULATION.
Consequences: A-ARM BREAKAGE COULD CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
Remedy: REPLACE SUSPECT A-ARMS.

Likewise, the fuel one was a pipe that could harden and leak, which it presumably would have done (or not) some decades ago.
Surely OPC aren't going to recall and change these items on an '88 car?

Other recalls:
'83: breaking rear leaf springs (what?)
'84: cruise control linkage sticking (remove and bin it and then drive properly)
"85/'86/'87 Fuel pipes hardening and possibly leaking, also pipe sleeve not correctly fitted

It would be nice to think that an OPC would replace our 20+ year old suspension and fuel lines FOC, maybe it's worth hacking the system and adding anything else that could go wrong. Coilovers anyone?

They did the fuel pipe recall on my 87 turbo 25 years later so no reason why they won't do any recall work that hasn't been done. Collected the car from me, did the work, washed it and then dropped it back. A+ service from Porsche Tonbridge.

They have to do it. My fuel pipe has been replaced, but my front axle seems to have slipped through. I have to take it in for a quote to repair some recovery damage, so they can look then and we will take it from there.

I have to say that Sheffield OPC (JCT600) are perfectly happy to investigate it and to carry out the work if need be. Of course, they bill PCGB! It isnt as though they fund the work themselves...

'88 Turbo for the fuel pipe, and some 1988 cars for the 'front axle' inspection, as far as I know. If you call your OPC service reception with your VIN they will check for you. I dont know of any recalls for 1989 or 1990 models though.

This site appears to list recalls since 1992:

You almost hope there are lots of issues and you get half the car rebuilt now!
Cheers
Mick

Yeah I'm certainly going to give them a call to check the fuel pipe has been done, don't want a fire!

Dunc.

Interesting but missing both of mine. Series number 0001 - 2635 1987s need to get their PAS wiring looking at, though.
