S2 DIY

I have been doing some DIY on my latest S2
Only affordable way to keep them on the road these days !
The wiper arm had a doggy repair , so manage to get hold a decent pop off link for a tenner .
I set about removing the old unit and it just crumbled before my very eyes !!
I had a quick scan on eBay and found a second had unit with motor for 50 + Post
I then set about removing the fan box to be able to get remove the old wiper unit , and the small screws on the back of the box had rusted that bad that I could not remove them , so tried the 8mm nuts and again on the back was a pain but luckily managed to remove the air box .
These 944 are getting a little tricky to perform simple repairs !

Next small job was to check the top chain tensioner and I noticed some oil down one of the spark plug bores , so thought replace the cam cover gasket while I am checking the chain .
One of the thin cam cover bolts decide to snap , another rounded off and one came out slightly bent and out of shape !
O well just trying to get some replacements bolts so I can put it back together .
I think the chain tensioner looks pretty new ? And there are signs near the hydraulic tappet seat of damage ?
Is it the bottom slide to look out for or the top slide ?
Can I remove the tensioner whilst the chain is in place ? To check the bottom slide /
Or is the tensioner preloaded and will spring out further if removed ?
I tried to get a small mirror down the gap to check the bottom slide , but didn't have a lot of joy.

Nothing better than doing a bit of DIY on my S2 J

All tips welcome thanks .

Tackling the tensioner questions:

- Tensioner doesn't often fail but it's the slipper pads you need to worry about.
- You need to look out for both the top AND bottom slipper pad. Top one used to be cheap, bottom one expensive and hence often neglected. As they get older they get darker (cream - yellow - brown.) Looking at the photos the bottom one is quite dark and you should be thinking about changing it, so do the top one while you are in there.
- Yes, you can remove the tensioner with the chain in place. It's a fiddle but not hard. When it's out you'll see that it can be locked in the fully compressed position if you bend up a piece of U-shaped wire and push it into a pair of holes. You will need to do this to re-fit it.

Well done for doing this - it's a bit of preventative maintenance that many overlook.

Oli.

Thanks for your advice Oil, I think at this point I will get some new slides and fit them to prevent the dreaded Chain override !
I tried to puss down on the tensioner but it was solid .
I had seen on You Tube a man building up an S2 engine and he had the tensioner held with two pins , so I thought the tensioner was like the Ford tensioners , once you release them they won't go back .

Regards J

I know how it feels to have a car that fights you all the way. Ive been in a battle with mine for 5 years now.

Well done mate, but a cautionary note, if you don't know when the guides have been done, i would do them anyway. Just cost me in excess of a grand to sort my head out following failure of a cam guide!

http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=771210

For the sake of £80 odd i would do them.

Cheers

I read your post Paul and that is why I thought best check the slides !
I was sorry to hear about your misfortune .
I have seen both slides up of around £80 plus delivery , but not sure about the quality of the slides as they are not original ?
At one point you could only get on slide as a spare and the other came with the chain tensioner at a big cost .

Has anyone dealt with this after market chain tensioner slide kit ?

I can buy a brand new Porsche tensioner foe £210 and the other slide for £3

Am I best to opt for this or take a chance on the cheaper slides ?

Dilemma

Not sure if you need to replace tensioner but both slides and the chain cost me £100.
for that money I'd go original Porsche.

hi j.c
when i took my cam cover off i broke a couple of bolts. i replaced them with stainless steel bolts and cup washers, if you are near
peterborough you can have them.

Hi Muzz ,
Thanks for your kind offer mate , I managed to but a couple off ebay ! There are some more for sale but he wants 10 per bolt ! bit much ?

This is general to the original post , I started cleaning up the scuttle area ready for replacement wiper motor .

I fitted a new rubber rear lock seal and started to tackle some rust near the boot lock ! Nothing worse that to see rust on a Porsche ! Nooooooo

I will be selling an OMP steering wheel 1 month old cost 155 with the Boss unit , came with the car but I will not put it to good track use, and for insurance purpose I best remove it .
I still have the original steering wheel. I will post it under items for sale .

I managed to buy a brand new original Porsche tensioner for a bargain price 160 delivered ! great deal from JZM thank you.
The old tensioner was an original Porsche unit and I believe that there is very little wear to the slides ? I do not know how much wear is allowed on the slides ?

Interesting, as JZM pulled out of the 944 market some years ago citing "parts availability" as the reason why!

Did you price it direct from Porsche first? Perhaps JZM are clearing out some old stock and there could be some bargains.

I didn't think to contact the dealership as I thought the tensioners were big money ?

Did I do well Paul to pay this kind of money for the tensioner ? I hear that the slides are around the 70-80 mark ?

I will be selling my old tensioner soon if any one is interested for a rebuild ?. It must of been replaced already in the past and has very little wear . I am just replacing it out of obsession for my S2 !

If I do 1000miles a year in the S2 that means this new tensioner will last over 100 years ! They do not tend to fail till over 100000miles ?

Certainly sounds like they're clearing out some old parts.

I don't understand why people don't call a PC first for parts, though? Chances are that that they are only buying Porsche parts being sold on at a mark-up, or even worse they are pattern parts being sold for more than Porsche charge for new. Or, worst of all, used parts for more than Porsche's new prices!

It's a complete myth that Porsche are always expensive for parts. Most sellers try to prey on that myth, so be careful. [:)]

Paul, I contacted my local PC today for some bolts and I asked how much the tensioners are ? He replied 329 pounds new retail ! Feck ! Maybe trade get a massive discount ? I am really happy what I paid for it !!

On another note I have been tackling the rust spot on the rear corner near the tail gate boot seal. Cleaned the rust away and applied some rust proof thick primer .
