S2 camshaft removal, help please!

Hi,

I'm removing the camshafts from my S2 to change the cam chain. Managed to remove the big cam gear bolt (750mm breaker bar, big 30mm spanner and two people).

Stuck with the front double bearing bridge. I've removed the four triple square bolts and it won't budge, presumably because of the loctite sealant?
Tried knocking it up lightly with a hammer and wooden block, don't want to give it too much abuse as worried I'll break the head or the cams. Also tried removing the sealing plug at the end of the intake cam with a punch, but stopped because I'm not sure how close the intake cam is behind...

Only other thing I can think of is starting to remove the other bearing caps and hoping the valve springs will create enough pressure to pop it off, or heat.

Any suggestions?

Rob

Hi

Done many cam chain changes on 16V 944's and the front bridge is always a tuffy to get off.

Try as you said removing all the cam bearing caps to loose of the cams. If it doesn't work then you could try tapping the cam upwards with a soft malet.

All else fails try some heat on and around the bridge area. This will help to break up the locate and loosen things up.

Good Luck

Just taken mine off.
It was stuck on somewhat. There are locating lugs in two of the bolt holes which hold it in place a bit tighter
If you are going to tap it off,put the bolts back in most of the way,so you dont snap anything.
As soon as mine moved a little i just kept wiggling it till it eventually came loose.
It seemed to be the seals holding it more than anything.

Craig,

Thanks for the help. I was worried mine was unusual, none of the online guides I've seen mention it as a problem, but everyone complains about that bolt. Will give it a go tomorrow.

Thanks timmy, good point will stick the bolts in. Do you know how close the intake cam is to the seal? I dented it about a mm trying to get it out hope I didn't damage the cam.

Going from my ipad pics,i would say close
I would download the pictures but it just says the file is too large, and im no techno wiz to know what to do
