Running hot?

I'm noticing that when I start up the engine a rush of heat comes from the heater vents - regardless of the temperature setting (in fact the setting is always set at 18-20 unless Alison has been using the car [8|])
The temperature settles down a little particularly if I use the blowers to clear it through.
At the same time the engine seems to be running hotter than usual -not overheating as such but definately using the cooling fan more than is usual - coolant levels are normal.

Have I got themostat or sensor problems? all advice welcome.
