Rob's 944S track car thread

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the comment that's some very helpful tips. The curve I didn't get enough experience of as I never really did the right line due to letting someone past so I felt less pressured - think I need to be slightly less polite on track days as I get faster.

I also don't feel I have time to check and remember my entry and exit speeds and so on - very impressed you get all the done! That's why I ask about data logging, video and so on so that I can examine it afterwards and make a note of where I do well, and not.

That video is very useful also, great stuff.

On another note: fitted the Braille battery (-10kg) and rear wiper delete kit (-1.8kg) today bringing the total to 94.9kg saved, not bad so far!

Schwantz is a funny one - only really a bend in a fast car, other wise it's just a curve you drive round at full throttle

I've been told that old hairpin is a fairly early turn-in - seems to be much quicker that way.

It's a much shallower corner than it looks so it should be a 4th not 3rd gear corner apparently as you can take the speed in. Not sure turn in is early though?

Well the only way to find out is to try it [;)]

This came via a friend from some instruction he'd had there.

I've done maybe 10 + trackdays there over the years, and I tried going in a bit earlier & it worked well for me.

No your both right, it is earlier than it looks and it is definitely a 4th gear job. You can use up all the kerb on the exit which I never did. It was the one place on the track where I was a long way away from matching Pete in that vid, I also always took it in 3rd as it seemed right at the time. I don't think I ever did much more than about 70 (indicated) mid corner and a bit more on turn in. I had a race Lotus up my chuff through there a couple of times so I knew I wasn't fast enough even before watching Pete's vid again and seeing the best part of 10 mph down [&o]. Still though I was hooking 4th half way round Coppice which was nice, I actually think that Pete is tending to carry too much in to that corner and thus not getting on it earlier enough.

I am not braking late enough either which is odd given that last year I was braking far too late which is what was compromising my corner entries so much so often. On the pit straight for example I was hitting the brakes just after the end of the pit wall which is about a car length at least too early. On t'other straight just on the start of the rise / crest again at least a cars length too early.

As for checking the speedo bit some do some don't. I know some who also feel its a bad idea because they think you should just concentrate on the road only and others who think its a really good idea because it helps to see how your progressing through a session. Really depends IMHO on how much "brain space" you have left over from the driving bit.

I have a feeling there's a proper set of scales at Coombe. Perhaps that could be tied in with the Friday of the 50th anniversary weekend if there's interest?

As a side point I thought there was as well but for the racing on Monday Steve Kevlin had a portable corner weighting set, looked like a longacre or similar to weigh in the cars.

Brain space is at a premium right now!

I think Oulton Park has some scales I might see i I can use at some point. I'll try earlier turn in.

I have just come across a new logger from AIM called solo. It looks a lot like a smaller thinner version of the well known performancebox and costs about the same (£300ish). I might get myself one of these as I don't have a laptimer in the car and this little thing does both and can be hard mounted on the cage or dash. 10hz GPS as well.

That's right - I weighed the Honda there last year - 975kg inc full tank :)
