Road Maintenance Petition

As South-West motoring enthusiast, the condition of our roads is currently upper-most in our minds.

A parliamentary petition has been started urging the government to hasten repairs and improve the parlous state of the UK road network. If the petition receives 10k signatures the government is legally bound to publish a response.

I’ve also signed but I have found reporting on the DCC website does get action, albeit not immediately. Perhaps if we all reported individual potholes we might stand a better chance of action.

We often have a difference of opinion on what constitutes a pothole and DCC measurements are not always valid as illustrated below with Darren showing poor technique.

Instead of going out and measuring a reported pot hole possibly a good idea would be instead of taking a measuring device they took some tarmac and just repaired it and 1/2 mile either side of the reported hole.

Judging by the size of the actual pothole in the first pic I reckon Darren definitely needs to invest in a much longer spirit level!??

All sorted now of course by Rishi’s promised massive investment in road repairs. [Cautionary note: this is a politician’s "promise”].

Controversial? It’s not just filling them in. Some really well known potholes reappear every year because they just aren’t repaired properly in the first place. Same when utilities tear open road. Just take a look at the different materials used/mismatch. The ‘join’ between the materials is never cured properly leading to the water ingress, freeze thaw and so on. Previously a tar was applied between joints on surface. This was stopped as it interferes with skid potentia! Odd how the French use it everywhere to stop it worsening at early crazing stage. The petition basically should say do it properly the first time. Nobody appears to be accountable for shoddy workmanship. Oop’s that’s a moan and a half. Sorry.

Spot on and well said. We waste so much on botching pothole, and its time they were accountable.

Do it properly the first time and we will not only save money, but will keep us motorists happier.

Hi Peter. Thanks for acknowledging thread info. Pity journalists aren’t firing right questions at actual roads repair decision makers. Makes you laugh when you hear about the necessity to build more roads (stone henge tunnel) when we can’t fix existing infrastructure!

I have some interesting tales of GOV. Roads, perhaps I will share over a coffee run some time

To inform the debate, he would like to hear about your experiences of potholes and their impact. He may quote your contribution directly during his debate.

Find out more and share your experience with him by midday on Tuesday 23 April:

Videos of the debate, the transcript of what was said, and other relevant material will be accessible after the debate on the webpage above."

No doubt others have been contacted too. So if you have been involved in any incident involving potholes, it would be extremely helpful to make use of the link to let Parliament know how extensive this problem is and how it is adversely affecting motorists in the West Country. The deadline for submissions is midday Tuesday 23rd April.

Called there office and offered information giving examples (insider info) and now wait to hear back. Won’t hold breath.
