Retrofit CD Changer

having had my Boxster for 4 months now I wish I had gone for a CD changer rather than using the SatNav slot. Can anyone offer advice on suitable changers? Is there a problem due to the "optical" connection fitted when built?

I have HEARD that you can burn a large number of MP3 files onto one CD which could obviate the need for a changer.

I would never do this myself as it could be illegal - and I only listen to Radio 5 live anyway!

Burning MP3s od CDs you already own is probably legal - anyway there is no chance of any action against you for doing this. If you burn downloaded or pirated tracks there is a theoretical risk of being sued.
A much bigger problem is that the average vehicle CD player does not play MP3s...
Some after market suppliers offer MP3 compatible players but these are probably as expensive as a CD-changer.
You can get a device that fits into a cassette slot that plays MP3s from a small memory card eg: Digisette, Rome player, or Advanced MP3 Player
With the combination of MP3Pro and cheap memory cards you can get a few hours of music on one device...
 
PURELY in the interests of research, I have just played one of these CD's with MP3 files burnt onto it (27 tracks) through my standard CDR-23 and it seems to work fine.

Is your car an 03? If so my understanding is that you cannot retrofit a CD changer. That's what I was told when finalising spec on my new one. Pre 03 there is a Porsche version which works fine. That's what I did on my 98 car.

you might want to re-check your test; I just tried it and it did not work; however, what drew my attention was your comment that you got 27 tracks on one CD - a 650 Mb CD will typically hold 160-180 MP3s (at 128 Kbps); if you used an audio burning program it will probably have converted the MP3s back to analogue...
MP3s need to be burned as data not audio.
 
Following a change in circumstances for my job, I feel the need for Satnav - not fitted to my 996. Have to go for a Becker - so found this - http://www.becker.de/beckerCC21/www_root/index.jsp?language=En Look under mulimedia - their online pro. Satnav, Telephone, email, sms, mp3.

Just need to save up for it - wish I wasn't such a sucker for technology!
 
What about something like a MP3 jukebox - like the new Kenwood 'Keg' - itself based on the Phatnoise unit (http://www.phatnoise.com). Anyone looked at or indeed fitted one to their boxster on this board?
 
There is a bloke at Chiswick sells Becker CD changers, without the Porsche badge for a lot less dosh than OPCs..... Here's his link (advertises in PP and 911&PW I think)

Got my Becker CD Changer from Ray Smith Car Hi-Fi through their internet site www.mobiletoys.co.uk for the price of £280.84p plus vat. I already had the wiring in place having got the CDR-22 sound upgrade package so it was a straight plug-in job and works fine.
 
what you can do instead is this and it will be cheaper and you can take to any car.


You ca Get kits which install a CD changer such as a sony into your boot. you have seperate control for the changer. The clever part is that the sound output is converted to a FM signal which can be picked up by your car normal fm radio.


Hey presto you have 6 cd changer which you can take car to car
 
Just pointing out that (stupidly!) UK law forbids these units as they constitute an "unlicenced radio transmitter".

Those transmitters for IPODs are illegal as well (but who would ever know!)
