Respray progress

Just visited my car again this afternoon, it's not the most exciting update I'm afraid, but at least it is progress [:D]

The nearside is almost finished now, the sill is done bar a little welding to the leading edge and the rear wings rusty corner has been replaced and was just in the process of being tidied. Behind the rear wheel was a dent which is being pulled out.

One of the GF wings is on and it looks pretty good, it only needed a little trimming apparently. The roof rack holes are now filled [:D] and most of the bolt holes in the interior are done too.

Alan has come up with a cunning way to mount the sunroof panel and I think this should look really good when it's done.

The headlights are going to cause a bit of a headache, as I think I mentioned previously they're naff but will have to do for the time being. Alan has already tried some brackets out on Simon's car which were a success, so fingers crossed there shouldn't be too many surprises.

There was an S2 there which has met a rather sad end, it looks to have been in superb pre accident condition and was written off for a relatively light front impact, it had bent the chassis rails but surely would have been repairable. Simon's breaking this and there are a couple of nice bits on it I have my eye on [:)] (however there's a good engine going if anyone's interested).

That's about it for the time being, hopefully the next update will be a bit more fun to look at [;)]

Just read the update on your website - 'door mirror holes to be welded up soon'.

I'm presuming you will be using A pillar mirrors like the race cars? [8D]
 
I've gone for some really nice carbon mirrors from Spa, they weigh next to nothing. Whether they'll last on the road is another thing altogether as they're really for race cars, but it'll be fun finding out [;)]
 
Looking pretty good Peter, It looks like you are having a superb job being done on it. I think this will prove to be a better route that re-shelling evern if it is not the cheapest as at least you know exactly what you have and that a top job has been done. Looking forward to seeing finished. You'll have to keep us updated about the GRP wings.

Peter, that's great progress indeed. It's going to be so nice for you knowing that you've done it all perfectly rather than half assed. You will have many more years of motoring in the car now. Patrick, I decided to fit the temporary fixed lights as I wanted rid of the pop up assembly and screen washer bottle now, it also makes it easier to fit the bonnet latches where I wanted. I got the lights for a reasonable price so I should be able to ebay them and get most of my costs back when the proper kit is launched.

The Le Mans spoiler is a bit tempting [:)] and the timing is right, but I think I'll stick with my current one for now as it's in good condition and wil probably restrict visibility less (which is a plus as my mirrors are smaller than the originals).
 
Looking forward to seeing the mirrors Peter. Are they the ones that just sit in the corner a la 935 or the ones on the skinny stalks? I think the race 935 types might be pretty limiting on the road but I do like them. I also like the LeMans rear spoiler and have often considered it. Would hope that it could be made to look well presented.
 
Finally some more exciting progress!

The front bumper is on! This is the one part that has caused me the most concern as (as far as I'm aware) it's never been fitted to a 944 before. The panel is a 924GTR bumper from GT racing and is designed for wide bodied cars with the full GTR front end.

I'm delighted with the way this has worked out although I'm very aware it polarises opinion (all welcomed btw!). It's not quite as in in your face as I feared, although I'd be the first to admit it's still not subtle [:)]

As can bee seen there's a bit of a gap [8|] So this was big concern number two! Alan has been beavering away and come up with this:

This is a beautifully made mock up which shows how it will look. The plan is to get fibre glass pieces made and they will be left seperate from the main bumper, which should mean that when the inevitable happens and I need to replace a damaged front bumper I can simply fit an off the shelf part and not some specially moulded design (which was the original plan, we intended to make a whole new mould and make bumpers from that).

Next up is the lights. These have worked out better than expected considering they're only supposed to be a short term solution (this is really thanks to Simon who kindly let me have his ones as they were much better than the ones he managed to get for me).

The buckets will be painted black and I'll add the black top margin to hide the light assembly. The tow hook is proving a little more tricky but solutions are being worked on at the moment, but other than that most of the front end is now on and aligned with just a little fine tuning left to do.

As everyone has come to expect rusty bits on my car I don't want to dissapoint:

The rust around the screen was actually a little better than thought now that the glass has been removed. The metal that's left is much more solid than first feared thankfully.

Hats off to you, you must truly love your 944 to invest so much in it. I am sure it is going to look very special
when it is finished, not to mention, quick as well.

 
The suspense is building, another long project is getting close to completion. I can't wait to see it in the flesh [8D]

I can wait to see more rust though [&o] Surely the next update will have no rust pics at all
 
Just tell me it'll be ready for the display at Silverstone! [8D]

I really do want to see a car on the main line-up that shows what you can achieve if you are a real enthusiast. Or complete madman! [&:]
 
Really like the new bumper Peter - very aggressive yet not OTT. Think you're gonna need some phwat deep dish rims though to really pull it off!
 
Thanks for the comments, I had to have another look at the pics this morning to make sure I was still happy with the appearance, but I've decided it's definately staying on.

That should be the last of the rust, although I'm kicking myself for not looking at the state of it at the top of the windscreen, but as Alan didn't bring it to my attention I guess it can't have been that bad.

I'm certainly hoping to have it at Silverstone, I've booked the time off, ordered the tickets and the car should be ready by then, but given how long its taken so far I'm not making any promises just yet.

I would dearly like to add some nice split rims but they'll have to wait. I have just bought a used set of Cup 1 replicas[:)], they have good T1-R's on so they're being transferred onto my genuine ones (for daily use) and then the replicas will end up with the 888's and then slicks for track work. I'm in a bit of a quandry as they're in nice condition but I don't want silver wheels so I may get them powder coated Cobalt Blue by a friend [:)] It will probably make them unsaleable but I suppose you can never have too many wheels [;)]

Cobalt blue wheels on a white car - hmmmmmm, it certainly will stand out from the crowd and should get lots of attention at Silverstone. Some nice advert stickers in the window for your bodyshop should get him a lot of business if the finished article looks as good as all the preparation so far.
 
Just a quick update, as my car is now partially in primer [:D] Still a lot to do, but at least we're entering the final phase now. Here's a couple of pics:
