Replacing Instrument Bulbs

A bulb has gone on the Rev counter which needs to be replaced. I've popped out the speedo to help lever out the Rev counter, but can't seem to get the Rev counter out (I don't have the OBC). P-Car suggest that it will come out without removing the steering wheel. Anyone have any ideas on getting it out? Does the black plastic casing on the top of the steering wheel unit have to come off?

The quickest way is to remove the steering wheel and yes the casing does come off but you don't need to remove it to pop out the rev counter

Thanks William, I suppose I'm slightly twitchy about the airbag going off etc! Seem to remember that you have to disconnect the battery for 30 mins prior to removing the wheel, is that right?

The quickest way I found to allow removal of the rev counter is to turn the steering wheel from a straight ahead position through 180 degrees. Note that it doesn't matter which way you turn the wheel []

Many thanks for all your help. I have downloaded the manual which I'm sure will come in very useful. Turning the steering wheel did the trick & the gauge came out quite easily actually. Great stuff.

Hmmm.... me too!

My OBC lightbulb has just blown - so I've been following this with interest as I also need to get the rev counter out. I really don't get how turning the steering wheel can do anything but make matters worse.... :-(

Any tips for a new guy??!

I have heard that the rev counter on an OBC equipped car is deeper due to the OBC, and on these cars you always have to take the steering wheel off to get the rev counter out - not sure if any OBC equipped owners can confirm this?

Had a go at this today myself. - With a bit of practice on the speedo I managed to grope my way to replacing two of the rev counter bulbs without removing it and only dropping one bulb to be lost forever into the depths.

-Fortunately any rattle is masked by the creaking screen.

Well, the OBC rev counter is deeper and so you can't use the (now patented) 'turn the wheel 180 degrees' trick.

Tom, if you jump into your 993 and go for a drive, take note of what happens when you turn the steering wheel...[]

As for the creaking windscreen Andy - I've recently acquired that small feature after I had my skuttle panel rust sorted out and a new windscreen fitted.

The chap the Porsche bodyshop use has said its caused by the external rubber window seal rubbing against its plastic mount (the one that is bonded to the window) and that if I return the car, he'll glue the seal in place to stop it moving... hope that's some use to you.
