Replace torque tube or not

Hi all i have a loud whine presumably from my gearbox i have bought another gearbox much lower mileage and checked so was going to change but what i would like to know is how do i know if my torque tube bearings are knackered and how to check.

My car has done aproximately 170,000 miles and if i go up to the redline in first and second i get no whine but third and above i do this would suggest to me the TT is fine and only the gearbox is at fault.
Am i right to assume this.

Personally, I'd get a ride in a few other 944s beofre I worried about noises from the gearbox. Or get a decent indie who knows the cars to assess it before you go changing parts .

Both of mine have been noisy, you should have heard the S2 without the carpet in the back! I know it's not a fair comparison, but when my Father had them new everyone used to ask waht the noise from the back was. It could be that yours is just perfectly normal, and another used gearbox could be worse.

Rutland would be a good opportunity to hear 20 or so whining gearboxes in perfect harmony! [&:]

It is very loud it sounds like an old straight cut box or a truck especially off load, noise disapears with throttle. I went out in a late s2 when i was looking to buy which was much much quieter than mine.

Any record of when the gearbox oil was last changed? Some fresh oil can make a hell of a difference. Mine was getting a bit whiny but is now "whisper quiet" by comparison.

And it might need attention. All I'm saying is that even the best ones are noisy compared with modern machinery, so get either a proper view from a specialist, or a comparison with a few other cars before you commit to spending anything. []

Cheers for the advice i may pop down to rutland and show off the rough but lovable lux, i changed the oil about 4 months ago and made it slightly quieter, i even put some of that slick 50 on the off chance.
I have the gearbox already from a friend and am going to change the suspension so may do it at the same time

Top up the oil and turn the radio up ! []

My car had a noisy gearbox when I bought it, whined like anything, if its loud enough to annoy then its loud enough to get it looked at imo. Having said that these cars can often go for years without having the gearbox oil changed or even checked so I would do this before anything else.

I ended up changing my gearbox for another (it also wouldnt shift from 4th-3rd) second hand unit and its much much quieter.

I agree with all the advice given but regarding your torque tube - all you can really do is spin the driveshaft by hand (with the torque tube out or disconnected at each end) listening for noise and "feeling" for any rough spots in turning.
