Replace GTS with GT4 - what would you do

Kerry,

I can’t speak from experience but from the performance and handling perspective I wouldn't think that there would be a significant difference between the GTS and GT4 on your favoured B-road drives, and the GTS suspension set-up is likely to be more compliant on those sorts of (poorly surfaced potholed!) roads than that of the more track-oriented (smooth road surface) set-up of the GT4.

If track days aren’t your thing then I’m sure that the GTS is a better all-round choice, and with restricted supply prices should remain firm in the short to mid-term, so I can’t see you losing much. The purchase of a GT4 is more an emotive judgment I would imagine though? 😀

Jeff

My 718 GT4 rides as well as my 981 GTS did, and better than a 981 GT4 does. Even though it's more track focussed, the suspension is superb on the road...

Isn't it just :)

I'd say a big part of thinking about getting a GT4 is because, well, it's a GT4.

I'm defo more of B back roads driver and love going around The Dales and Pennines. There is no doubt the GTS is an amazing car and it's a blast every time I take it out. I look forward to every chance I get to take it out, even if its just the 35 miles of motorway to work now and again. I like to do the odd track day (done a handful in the past in my M cars) but I probably only do 1 a year at most, if that.

TBH any concern is less about bad road surfaces than more about the front clearance. In fact I'd go as far as to say I'd like the GTS to be stiffer (mines got the optional PASM rather than SPASM). For example, I arrived at a humped back bridge in a remote village in the Dales on Saturday and thought it would be a problem for the GT4. There are also plenty of up hills that have bits resembling the photos people post when asking if a GT4 will get onto/up their driveway. Last thing I want to do is get stuck in the middle of nowhere :)

Honestly the front apron is not that bad that you get stuck in random places! It’s really only exceptional changes in steepness or speed humps to be alive to. I would be really surprised if any driver with a bit of nouse got themselves in that sort of trouble!

The bridge was entertaining. The person I was with was in a lowered Focus RS with has an additional front apron, splitter and side skirts. There was plenty of scraping and I did wonder if he was going to 'beach' it :)

To give you an idea of front ground clearance..

Well following the mantra of “Perfectly irrational” and listening to heart rather than head I've put my 'bribe' down with the OPC to get an allocation on a GT4 :)

12 months though and given they stop production this year potentially not at all, so we'll see

Until then 12 more months of the fantastic GTS

Wise move. You can get your deposit back if you change your mind so all it costs is tying up that money for a bit.

but then a 718 GTS rides much better than a 718 GT4 and a 718 Spyder also rides much nicer on a bumpy road. Depends what people say is nice/smooth I guess. GT4 feels a bit too much for the road to me. I guess PS4S tyres soften it a bit though.

Best move for me, an amazing car but the ground clearance makes you think about the best routes :) Both amazing cars but glad I swapped.

For anyone interested I thought I'd update to bring to a conclusion.

In Jan last year I ended up changing the order for another GTS. At the end of the day practicality won, and as I'm probably never going to take it to a track, I'd never got the advantages of the GT4. As on the road the GTS is 99% of the GT4 it's right for me. As soon as I'd switched I knew it was the right decision.

Anyway, after 13 months (and 3v delays) the new GTS finally arrived. Collected it from Porsche Leeds yesterday. Config code for anyone interested - PP6AKNL4

As an aside

I have the pdls lights

but not led main lights

I tend to dazzle other drivers

whereas my Corolla led lights don’t

nor did my previous Mercedes van with led lights

Interestingly I was going to get it in crayon, but then saw one very similar to my new one at the Porsche event at the Motorist last summer. It had the high gloss SportsDesign pack and black GTS wheels. It was the inspiration for mine.

I then saw a 981 GTS with the 911 Turbo wheels and had to have them.
