Repair body panels - Your experiences

I get a lot of requests for advice from club members about repair panels for Porsche models, I know of a few options for various different panels listed bellow, but many of them I have not welded in myself, so can't comment or advise on them, but would really love to hear experiences of those who have actually used them or paid a bodyshop to use them.

Once apon a time, there were limited options for 944 body repair panels.
Originally there was only really Genuine parts available.

Then Stuart Gordon (AKA FlashGordon) was making sills, which would do for a enthusiast with a smaller budget, no diamond to mark jacking location and a flat lower edge rather than a channel, and he also made the lower rear quarter sill termination repair panel (was never an option from Porsche without buying a whole quarter)

Then Stuart stopped making them, and now there seems to be options from several locations.

Front Wing lower Repair Panels
  • Dereros3 (ebay - Lanarkshire) £150 a pair - Not seen these myself in the flesh. Do they match the contours for the S2/Turbo skirts/trims?
  • Lauras8181 (Ebay - Burntwood - Think they are classiccarpartsandpanels) - £85 - Not seen these myself, Do they match the S2/Turbo profile?
  • ClubAutoSport (Fibreglass) - I did buy a pair of these when they first came out, just to see what they were like, never used them though, something wrong about putting in Fibreglass where there should be metal, even though fibreglass wings can be a performance alternative, it just does not seem right.
  • GenuinePorsche - £800+ Buy a whole wing and chop the bottom part off as a repair panel, or use the whole wing.
Sills
  • Dereros3 (ebay - Lanarkshire) £150 a pair with LRQST (see bellow) - I think these might be Stuart Gordons ones or his press maybe, seems identical except these have the jacking diamond feature, but still a flat lower edge rather than a channel like the original items.
  • Dereros3 (ebay - Lanarkshire) £200 a pair with inner sill (rip panel) - Same sills, but with what looks like a poor version of an inner sill.
  • Lauras8181 (Ebay - Burntwood - Think they are classiccarpartsandpanels) - £110 each - Not seen these myself, but seem to have the jacking diamond and the channel in the lower edge.
  • GenuinePorsche - £179 - £338 - Expensive, is an entire sill, so includes the door step, is usually an absolute mm perfect fit.

Lower rear quarter sill termination panel (LRQST).
  • Dereros3 (ebay - Lanarkshire) £70 a pair - I think these might be Stuart Gordons ones or his press maybe, seems identical. Good budget part like Stuart's ones, but no under side detail, so just an outer skin for this part. These match the skirt, but only because you can trim them on the leading edge to make them sit at the right angle and blend them into the arch.
  • Lauras8181 (Ebay - Burntwood - Think they are classiccarpartsandpanels) - £75 each - Not seen these myself, they do seem to have much more detail to terminate the channel in the bottom of the sill, but do they match the S2/Turbo profile for the rear end of the skirt? as there is more to these, which is good, there might be less scope to trim them on the leading edge to have the right angle on the bottom?
  • GenuinePorsche - £800 to £1500 whole rear quarter- Like the wings, either cut off the bit you want, or fit the whole thing... But ohhh the cost! I hope PorscheClassic start making just a repair panel.

Lower rear quarter wheel arch back section
  • Dereros3 (ebay - Lanarkshire) £150 a pair - Not seen these in the flesh, would like to hear from anyone who has used them.
  • GenuinePorsche - £800 to £1500 whole rear quarter- Like the wings, either cut off the bit you want, or fit the whole thing... But ohhh the cost! I hope PorscheClassic start making just a repair panel.
I am sure when I last scanned ebay, there was someone else up north, maybe Bolton, that was selling sills and LRQST repair panels, but cant find them now.

There is also a couple of options for places selling whole pattern wings, but I have not seen these in the flesh, but again the whole wing could be fitted or just chop off the lower section for that as a repair panel and get around the "pattern panel poor fit issues". But it seems a bit of a waste.

Anyway, so I can help future enquiries about what to use, which I will still do with caution, but I would really love to hear from people who have used any of the above, or know of other alternatives.

 
I have used classic car parts and panels for my nearside lower front wing, excellent panel, I wouldn't hesitate to use their sills if my car needed them, it doesn't...:) Many years ago, I had some corrosion on the lower nearside rear quarter panel, I bought an entire new panel and had the section required cut out and welded in place. IIRC the genuine panel back then cost me £850 plus VAT, I've learnt not to waste so much money these days...:) Both repairs were done by Chris at 911 Bodyshop Wembley, today, I'd give the car to my son and his body shop guy to do the work.

Good to see you are still in here John.

It's not an entirely selfless act, my post will hopefully prompt some discussion of peoples experiences with the different panels, to make my job of recommending what to use to members easier.

That's good to hear Pete.
Once welded in, do the black trims/skirts match up to it ok? I did hear some reports on a Facebook group a few months ago that they might not have done, that they had too much of a curve on the bottom edge to match the trim, but looking on the photos of them on their web page, they seem pretty flat on the bottom.

 
When I had my bodywork overhauled my front wings were full of bad repairs, bodge and fibreglass so I replaced them with a pair of pattern part wings that I got as part of a group buy a few years ago. A friend of a friend locally deals in old Ford repair panels and bought up the remaining stock of an Italian parts company - about 15-20 pairs of Turbo and N/A wings plus some odd single sides.

They're a pretty good fit, didn’t require any trimming but need some repositioning and a bit of massaging into place - a few slots needed lengthening, etc. that sort of thing.
 
I've used classic car parts panels for both nearside and offside sills that include the LRQST bit as you call it. fitted by my local Bug specialist! Fit seems good, but diamonds were not in the panels so they added them for me. fit with the trim/skirt is okay, but my trims could do with replacement tbh. Body shop hand made inner sill sections fro replacement as the CCP panels are outer only....
I will likely be buying lower front wing repair panels in the coming year/s for the same ....
 
I fitted genuine Porsche sills when I restored mine. They were a perfect fit with no fettling required. I felt it would be a false economy to use any other sill as when I come to sell I believe buyers will place a value on having genuine Porsche panels.

I have a brand new rear quarter panel in my garage that has had the LRQST bit chopped out of it. Bought it off eBay a few years ago thinking it might be useful for the rear wheel arch section.

I think I will be getting myself some of the classic car parts peoples repair panels to try out myself (I am bound to need them on one of my 944's eventually) but in the meantime, I can pass on you chaps endorsements from members looking for technical advice.

I have just bought a sill panel and a lower rear panel from CCP&P (Burntwood) - and am beginning to fit them now. They look pretty to me so far.
 
CCP&P lower front wing panels used last February. Nicely made and painted, body shop was very happy with them, finished job was good.
 
I'm just bumping this thread again to see if there are any more recent recommendations. I knew I had sill work to do when I bought the car, and now the car is on the lift, one side is clearly in need and I have have to investigate more on the other. The rest of the underside looks great. I have a really good welder friend ready to get started, so I need to buy outer sill and rear quarter panels, inners may be OK. I looked at CCP&P and Clubautosport websites.

I have decided to use classiccarpartsandpanels - I'm getting inner & outer sills and rear quarters for both sides. As this is a keeper, I want to make sure these are done right and I won't have to worry in the future. I will report back with pictures in a new post as we go through the project. Their next manufacturing slot starts in early November, so hopefully I will get the parts towards the end of November and we will start in December.
 
Hi, only just seen this. I did my S2 using the centre, outer sills and rear 3/4 panels from these guys. The sill parts were very good indeed, You will need to beef up the joddled end on the outer sill though.

The rear 3/4 sections were flat pressed and took me quite a while to get the curvature right without distorting the rest of the rear wing. The car has come out really nicely & happy to share experiences and what I learned if I was doing it again.
 
Thanks Greg, it would be great to read about your experience, especially if you have any pics. Recommendations on what you would do if doing it again would be welcomed.

I bought inner and outer sills from Dereros3 back in 2018, cost was £200 for both sides, they had the jacking diamond on them and were fitted with no issues.

Hi Pete,

I've just got my car back from JMG and need to address some rust issues. Front wheel arch (both) and some other bits.

Any chance you can introduce me to Chris? I can't seem to find a website for them.
