renewing tax after sorn?

hi all, hope you had a glorious day driving in the sunshine?!!!


my cab has been sorn since dec, and its now time to get it on the road again. i have just taxed it on line, (back dated from the 1st of this month) so am i ok to drive it tomo even though the tax disc wont arrive until max 5 days?

Depends how lucky you feel. The requirement is to display a tax disc as well as to have the car taxed. People have been done before for not displaying a disc which they actually possessed.
 
The minute you tax it online it is automatically no longer sorn. You even get a 4 or 5 day ( cant remember) exemption from the failing to display offence to allow for postage. All of the info i have told you is kosha it's actually on the government website.

it was 23 degrees here today, and even though i was busy decorating, i was dying to get her out. can't believe the weather today, fantastic, even if it was July!! :)
 
I'm not sure, but I did find this on the DVLA website -

Displaying your tax disc

Your vehicle tax disc must be displayed on the passenger side (kerb side) of the vehicle's windscreen. If there's no windscreen or you have a motorcycle or sidecar, you should display the tax disc on the kerb side of the vehicle.

A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200. The tax disc can not be transferred between vehicles.

If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there's now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

Now not sure if the 5 days applies since you've purchased it at the end of the month - if you risk it I would suggest you take a print out of your receipt so you can show her majesty's constabulary should you be pulled over.

 
I think if you applied for the tax before your current SORN expired you have a 5 day exemption to allow new one to arrive. Not 100% sure though.

You are right edd when i de sorned my T5 the website made it very clear so hd's safe :)
I didnt know myself until then.
 
MMmmm, the DVLA site isn't that clear on sorn/tax. my sorn was due to expire on the 31st December this year, so according to the website, it only describes that i can get a 5 day grace if i apply for a tax disc whithin 5 days of the sorn expiring. i've applied 9 months before, or 3 months AFTER the sorn was declared.
 
I believe that the exemption applies if your apply before it expires not that you have to wait until it does...

The important bit is getting your car on the database as this is what the cameras check against. Drove past 2 camera checks in the past week which surprised me as I used to think of this as something on the telly not the real world. Seems the DVLA are having a crack down.
 
I didn't think you could tax a vehicle online if it had been sorned. Maybe things have changed. Certainly I had to take my registration document and the srn notice and insurance to the post office last year.
If you can do it online then ANPR will know its legal and I thought you were fine until it came through as long as you aren't driving before the tax comes into effect - so the 31st of the previous month.

You certainly can do that currently, as I did it last December when mine was coming out of the body shop.
