I may be "inheriting" a LHD 968 - Dad's got no room for it. I know the car is generally mechanically sound, but needs some TLC and some money spending on it to bring it back to its original glory. The polishing etc I can do but the greasy stuff I haven't got the room to even attempt.

I am after suggestions for a specialist who might be interested in this sort of work in the Yorkshire, Lancashire area. Anyone any experience?

I have good experience of Strasse but who else is there and which are the good ones? The ones that care about the car not just after your money?

It is also currently living in Spain so will need to be registered in the UK. I believe there is a set of RHD lights with it but need fitting.

What's the process for registering the car? How much is it likely to cost? Anything other than the lights that would need addressing?

Hi Jez,

To register in the UK you will need the following:

The Spanish paperwork ( Tarjeta and Permiso de Circulation )

European Certificate of Conformity ( Available at a cost from Porsche )
I don't think because of the age that it needs an SVA .

English MOT - RHD headlights, rear fog light on the correct side, should have MPH speedo but they don't normally check, rear seat belts must be fitted if it has rear seats

Take this all to your Local Vehicle Licensing Office, together with a cheque for the Road Fund Licence. They may wish to inspect the vehicle but they haven't on the last 3 I have done.

Once the car is in the UK & with your more northern location, you cannot beat Hartech in Bolton -- Baz or his son-in-law Grant will deal with you well, they will sort everything and have a proper 'preventative' approach to the servicing of the car.
 
Actually there is another VERY good indie. In MB Engineering. Near Kendal, Mike is a VERY meticulous chap + i can recomend him highly...He,s an enthusiast too boot....[;)][:D][:D]

Furthermore I was knocked off a bike as a teenager by somebody driving a LHD as a direct result of him not being able to see correctly as he pulled out of a junction, so I have a particular aversion.*

I would have thought that with the strength of the Euro currently that the car could be sold on easily where it can be continued to enjoyed in the environment for which it was built, leaving you with enough to purchase a nice RHD 968 without any conversion aggro.

Just my 2p worth.

Thanks James, it is the one thing that keeps coming back to me making me think. I posted something ealier asking a general question about LHD in the UK and got a few responses about car parks, etc being problem.

My thinking at the minute is that if I got the car I could do give it some TLC and see how I got on with the LHD. If not happy could then sell it on....but still mulling it over.

Its "no car at the moment having to buy one" vs. "accept the extremely generous offer of a LHD, just got to get it back to the UK (which I'm sure will be great fun)"
 
I know I'm a bit late to jump on this thread - but I wanted to give a big thumbs up to MB Engineering as well! Mike looked after my car very well indeed.
 
You don't need to change the headlamps or speedo - I've left my speedo in Kph and simply put some silver duct tape on my lights to stop them dazzling. I've had it like this for years and it passes the MOT every time.
