Rear wiper has a mind of it's own

The rear wiper on my 1988 S4 has a mind of it's own. It will choose which part of the rear window it wants to clear, and will then choose where it wants to park itself. I have just purchased the car and this is one of a few problems that I've found. Is the problem the relays or the motor, please? Any help gratefully received.
