Hi all,

I'm going to re-index the rear torsion bars in-situ. I've cut the holes in side of the sills and need to cut the end cap off the tube.

is it just an inner cap or does anyone have any photo's or advice before I make a utter ....* of it?

My advice is speak to Alex Eacock. The second time is relatively easy, but I understand that the first time can be a pain in the arse and Alex has done enough to be able to advise you. Personally Id let EMC do the first one...

Thanks Simon, I did go down to EMC and had a tutorial from Kev & Alex, in January. So I've got a good idea, but the end caps look a bit different are they inner things or a (drill a hole and prise out) or overall things like a beer bottle?

I honestly dont know Gerry. Alex gave me a template to cut my own, but after talking it through I decided to let them do it. It didnt get completed in the end because I bought another 944.

I have a 'how to' somewhere if youre interested?

Arent you going to take it all out to re-bush it anyway? Its always easier on the garage floor! [:D]

No I'm racing next weekend, so jack it up, cut the ends off pop the torsion bars out, lower it and pop em back in..
Simples.

Or is it?

Gerry,
I have sent you re-indexing "how to" guides, it took about 10 hrs to do mine including Geo, I think you would find it a lot easier to drop it off the car.

Andy

Could I have a copy of the guide, mine is in bits at the minute for all new bushings and a coat of paint. I think I have a handle on setting it up but you can never have enough info can you [;)]

I wonder if everyone has the same guide? [:D]

Having loosened it all off Andy, its a 30 minute job to re-index with the holes in place!

With the holes in place it's very easy to do, I put a mark on mine where it had been previously prior to taking out the torsion bar. To take the torsion bar out, you literally hammer a long rod inside the outer spring plate carrier. The torsion bar will then fall out the other side.. Took me about 1 hr to do it as I misaligned by one spline the first time.

Thanks it's the end cap I'm struggling with, do I cut it off? Where should I cut?

Don't cut anything, hit the centre with a screw driver or punch and the cap will pop off its just a press fit

No probs, let me know if you have any problems but its pretty straight forward once you have done it the first time.

Ok so I finally got the end caps off, drilled thru' 'em then used a screwdriver in way no screwdriver oughta.

Tried given the shafts a little gentle persuasion but cant get them any further than this? How much force should I use?

Is it difficult because the shocks are still in place and there's some sort of tension?

do I need to swing the arms lower?

2.5 lump hammer? but I've found out that the shocks are putting them under tension, so tomorrow I'll take the shocks of and have another go.
