Rear speakers with the PCM unit - help!

Hi people, im new to this site having purchased a 2.7 Zenith Blue Boxster W Reg not so very long ago. My car is fairly highly spec' d although one thing im a little upset about is that the car doesn' t have rear speakers. It has obviously the door speakers and also the dashboard ones but none in the rear. Ive found many sites whilst browsing the web (mostly U.S) whereby you can purchase a kit which fits in the rear storage compartment but no where can I find out how to wire the speakers into the current audio system. I have the PCM and also a 6CD changer, does this complicate matters? I guess my question is, has anyone out there fitted rear speakers to their Boxster and how easy was it to do?

I purchased a rear speaker kit from the Suncoast Porsche dealer in the states (original Porsche equipment) - I had ordered my 01my S from the factory with PCM, CD changer and the improved 6 speaker system, also.

Fitting was very easy - the kit comes with all wiring needed and comprehensive instructions.

The only aspect of it that I could see causing problems was removing the current ' storage bins' from the rear storage compartment, to allow fitment of the speakers - although with the right tools this should' nt be a problem.

I personally found the 4 rear speakers significantly improved the sound system and (important to me) kept the original factory look.

Hope this helps,
Peter.

This should help you see if you want to take the job on:-

My thanks for your comments guys. My Boxster has the central ' sliding' storage compartment but I do not have the side storage ' holes' . These are blanked over? Does this mean I also need the storage kit that they talk about or can I simply cut out these blanking panels and still install the speakers into the space? I am still a little confused as to where these new speaker wires actually connect to the existing audio system as the described example deals with a head unit which I do not have as its integrated into the PCM. Still I would very much like to do this and think I may take a chance and go for it?

The blanking plates you refer to should be simply glued in place. Just cut these out and fit the new speaker grills supplied in the kit.

Re: Sound o/p. The PCM head unit has the same speaker O/P connector as the basic CDR22 etc.
However a (slight) problem with this setup is that your front + door speakers are fed from the amplifier in the front boot - whereas the new rear speakers with this setup are supplied direct from the head-unit and therefore ultimatly have less power available - not really an issue as they are only ' fill in' speakers anyway.

ok,
Peter.
