Rear Park Assist

Hi all, About 9 months ago Groupon were offering a cheap self-fit kit for rear parking sensors "RAC ParkMe Safe". It was cheap, so I bought one on impulse, as much out of curiosity as anything else. I had my doubts about whether it would work with the thick GRP rear bumper on the 944, but eventually today I was bored enough to have a go. Surprise! it works reasonably well - the range isn't huge, starts beeping 4-5 feet out and goes continuous tone at about 11 inches, so not for the hasty parker, but better than nothing! If anyone else wondered about this item and wants to know more, reply to this and I can add a bit more detail about fitting, which was easy. I have no affiliation to RAC or any vendor of the device, this is just for interest and all the usual disclaimers,YMMV, etc.

So are you saying it works through the PU? Without drilling a hole? I've never wanted one of these because of the way they are so visible (even as an OEM fitment - the really spoil the 997s rear end) but if the technology can work invisibly I'd fit one.

My 2008 Infiniti EX35 has this front and rear (and corners) - 4 sensors in each of front and rear bumpers - they are body colored so don't really show. They are a nuisance when using a drive through bank/burger joint/ etc. as you have to pull up closely to a building or kiosk but they are great for parking, alerting to pedestrians behind in your blind spots, etc. The Infiniti has switch so you can turn it off when using drive thru ATM etc so good stuff I say.

You don't mention if your kit has a switch but I hope it does.....

Without commenting on the ugly-on-the-outside aspect, what are they like inside? I have a personal loathing of non-standard looking knobs and dials on dashboards. A park-assist display with some small LED's (or similar) stuck on the standard 944 dashboard would put me off any practical advantage the unit may offer.

Id be tempted to fit a rear camera. Easily powered via the reverse lights with a small 4" LCD display. You can buy the camera and screen for pennies now - Ive been meaning to buy and fit something to my girlfriends Astra, as the rear visibility is terrible.

Mark,

Yes, this one works through the bumper material - no holes to drill.

The kit I fitted uses an aerial element fixed to the inside of the bumper, no holes drilled. For rear fitment it's powered off the reversing light, so no switch required, but you could use it on the front by wiring it to a switch.

Hi Oli,

This kit is invisible from the outside, no holes in bumpers. In my case, it's also invisible inside as I decided to hide the display unit away and rely on the audible beeps only.
