rear hatch won't close, any ideas please?

morning folks, couldn't close my rear hatch on saturday, it sits flush to the body but won't lock in place, had to abort a maiden voyage with the kids, very disappointing. Anyone got any ideas please? The motor seems to be working fine, whirring round and round as usual, with the metal bar on either side that would "trap" the pins going in and out so that seems ok as well. I know the hatch pins can become worn, but the odds of both of them being worn on the same day? millions to one I'd have thought.
I've run out of ideas, so any thoughts appreciated please.

seems odd, as the pins lock by "clipping" into place when you close the hatch, the motor only releases them.
 
I would clean the locks with plenty of WD40 or similar as they can become clogged up with grease and dirt if the pins still do not lock in you could adjust them to be longer and then see if they lock in place, then back them off equally until they just stop locking then lengthen slightly til they lock. The boot on my S2 stopped locking the other day and it was due to having too mucg grease in the locks which had frozen, I just sprayed plenty on releasing agent in wiped the grease and dirt out and applied a fine smear of clean grease works fine now, I knew it had to be something other than worn pins as both the locks and pins are new.

Mine would sometimes play up when very cold and it was simply the gunge and grease almost freezing and not allowing the jaws to spring closed. Look down into the locks whilst you turn the key and you should see the jaws opening and closing freely. If they stick open take each lock out (two nuts under the carpet) and clean it all up as David suggests.

When you refit them make sure the two nuts are only loosely holding it in place, then close the hatch so that everything centres up before tightening them fully. Also don't overtighten as this too can cause the jaws to stick open.

I assume there is also a claw on the left? but that isn't closing and opening when I turn the key so further investigation needed.

Had the same problem when I got my 944. Hatch kept popping open on it's own. Fitted two new pins but still kept opening. Then fitted two brand new receivers - single claw in each one. Job sorted! It don't pop open now, no matter how bad the road surface is.[:D]

Nice easy fix.

They will jam open due to poor setting of the release mechanism or (more likely) gunk. They are easy to take off and clean (in a small jam jar with some paraffin) and once grot-free will be as good as new. Put some light oil on the lever mechanisms and some light grease down the recepticles themselves (and clean the pins at the same time) and put them back on the car. You'll need to do a bit of fiddling to get the alignment right but that's not hard and they should work like new.

Try feeling around under the nearside latch. Find where the rod joins the cam and push it back into the latched position. This will allow both sides to lock, but its a temporary fix as opposed to an actual solution.

A single claw seems odd to me my new receivers had two sort of half circle pieces that open and close equally onto the pin.

Easy way to adjust is to shut the boot hatch with the receiver fastening bolts loose slightly so they can move a little, then while lying in the boot and the help of someone outside release the boot, see if the boot pops open without lifting the lid if not then shut the boot again and move the receivers to centralise them with the locking pins, in theory if your boot struts are good the hatch should pop open and lift once released, or at least open manually without having to pull too hard on the spoiler. Tighten the release bolts once you have them aligned with the locking pins
 
Are the single claw ones interchangeable with the double claw ones?

My car has double claws but one doesn't work properly even after cleaning. I have a set of single claw ones so am thinking of using one of them or should I replace both?
 
My 944 came with receivers that had two half circle shaped claws. When these were worn out I ordered two new ones from a Porsche dealer. Single claw ones turned up in the post. I fitted them and all works fine.

 
final update, all fixed now, had to remove the lock. The plastic bit that connects the metal rod to the lock was stuck, but got it moving with wd40 & all put back together and working perfectly. Very satisfying fixing something myself, can afford an ice cream now. Thanks for all the help and tips
