Rear brake back plates

On Sunday I noticed that both brake back plates on my S2 were loose. Investigated and two of the three mounting on each were broken completely, the third was ok but allowing th things to flap about. I've taken thm off completely for now but am unsure what to do next.

I was just going to get a pair of new ones but they're £50 each from Porscheshop (haven't tried OPC yet). Does anyone run without them and have any experience of the effects over a period of time? I'm assuming inside face corrosion of the rear discs is likely. Any chance of finding some good 2nd hand ones or do they all go like this? Repairing mine doesn't seem like an option, they're too thin to weld and in pretty por condition generally.
 
I'm looking into this as well (only one of mine's in poor condition, but may as well replace both at once and stay on top of things).

I've been quoted £43.55 +VAT each by Porsche Centre Glasgow.
 
Yes you can run without them perfectly fine - and many people do. The only thing is you'll get brake dust on the suspension components. Not a problem. Replacement of them is a PITA as you need to disassemble the hub assembly to replace them.
 
I'm going to shot blast mine tomorrow and look at the true condition of them. If I can repair them (possibly by pop-riveting on new supporting eyelets) then I will. If not then I'll either bite the bullet and buy some new ones or will live without. Not really keen on this though as in every other way the car is original and unmodified.

I removed mine by bending them over the hub but this split them slightly in the middle. I assume that the caliper, disc and handbrake backplate would have to come off to replace them?


 
As Scott says they are only dust shields. One of mine dropped off the first night I had the car and I have been running without it ever since. It will cause you no problems. It is not even an MOT failure mate.
 
I've only studied them on the front hub when I installed the Big Blacks which necessitated their removal. They screw onto the hub, but behind the bearing pack, so you need to remove the disk and the bearing and remove it off the hub spindle. I did contemplate replacing them with the plates off a 928GTS to retain them, but when I realised the need to disassemble the hub and after some research about running without them I didn't bother.
 
I was going to replace all 4 of mine when I did the brakes last year, but as everyone has mentioned I didn't bother with the fronts because the hub has to come off so I only did the backs
 
Binned the rears off mine this weekend, Scott you sure you need to take the hub off to refit as mine came off the rear no prblemo ?

Fitting is a reversal of removal and all that.
 
Does anyone know if removing rear plates can be done up on jack stands is it an up on a lift jobbie?! I've got one side pretty new (gutted I didn't read this thread before!) and now the welds have gone on the other side and it's rattling like mad and driving me nuts! Happy to remove though given what everyone else is saying!
 
Jack stands will be fine, you only have to take the wheel off to get at the nuts and if its going in the bin anyway just ywist it over the disc and throw it in the bin [;)]

Took my wobbly rear ones off last year when I fitted the new discs and threw them in the bin never bothered to replace them, and unless you have a show car and want it factory perfect then at the price for new ones I wouldn't bother replacing them
 
The alloy reacts with the steel bolt and the hole through which the bolt passes erodes and they are no longer fixed, some penny washers would sort this in some cases, but i still chose to bin them...................more brake cooling !!
 
When I did my brakes over winter the back plates were in very good condition so I painted them with black smoothrite.

Rob's on the money again. They corrode and break and flap around and rattle, and I'm not sure what purpose they serve anyway.

I removed the back ones on mine about 4 years ago, and would have removed the front ones as well if they came off easily ...

Oh dear..... I'm going to have to (again....) agree with the Honourable Oliver....

Mine on the front were fine but 'removed' them (optomistic terminology for use of a dremel...) to aid cooling for this year's July trip to the Ring
