Realistic??

Hi people,
Please don't shout at me [:)]
But... I am wondering if it is realistic that I could get a mainly sorted 964 C2 or C4 for around £10 - £11k?
I currently have an Alfa GTA and am aware that questions like these posted on forums annoy current owners as nobody wants to devalue their car. So I apologise if this question hit a nerve with any of you.
i just want to know if £10 - 11k is a pipe dream or is a possibility. I was considering a Boxster S, but have always loved the 964!

Thanks in advance for any of your input, and don't hold back with the comments... I can take it [:D]

I am obviously slightly biased, but I somehow doubt that you'd find a sorted car for that sort of price.

No such thing as a cheap Porsche etc....[;)] What you don't pay in the purchase price, you will almost certainly pay further down the line in repairs.

Ask me how i know...[8|][:D]

Above all, check for rust as the old throw away line about "fully galvanised" has less and less relevance as these car advance towards 20yrs old!

Thanks for that [:)]
I had a feeling this would be the case. But you know what it's like when you get a crazy idea in your head! [:(]

Can you get one for that price..yes. Will it be well sorted..no. However if you can put up with a few minor problems and put them right over time, it will be perfectly liveable with and is unlikely to let you down.

...... slips back into his dream again [:D]

What are the mileage issues with these motors. From my (limited) knowledge of the engines they are good for 180k. Does that sound about right? Obviously that is based on the fact that around 80k they are likely to have had a top-end rebuild and obviously base your response on them having regular servicing.

At the price range I was looking at I guess I would be looking at something with 100k+

There are plenty of examples in the USA that have done 200K+ miles with no rebuild.

Yes you will have to get one with 100K+ miles. Actually....it will have to be more than 150K miles. Don't let the fact that it might not have had a rebuild put you off. In fact, you are unlikely to get one that has had a rebuild because recently rebuilt ones will be priced higher than your budget.

They don't stop working just because they have not had a rebuild. There's no defining reason or mileage for a rebuild i.e. you can't say it MUST have a rebuild because it's done more than 100K. Even when you take it into a garage and the they recommend a rebuild (maybe after doing a leak down test) it will still keep going. Most of us get our rebuilds done because we love the cars and want them to perform as if they have just come out of the factory.

Vincent,

I think Nick and Steve have said it all really. Scanning the PH adverts you'll undoubtedly come across cars in that price range - but how much you'll need to spend on them to come up to any sort of acceptable standard is going to depend on your needs and aspirations. There are relatively few cars around now with much less than 100K miles - and if they are about they certainly aren't going to be in your chosen price range. Top end rebuilds are seen as a plus point but often they are not THAT necessary. Again, much depends on your intended use. A slightly asthmatic example might be OK for the occasional weekend drive but less acceptable for a track day junkie. Each to his own.

For some people much of the fun in in the challenge - to do the work to get the car as you want it. If you're looking for a track-ready example with no work to do then your budget is probably well short.

Good luck in the search - there is a wide range of cars out there.

Regards

Dave

Thanks so much for all your input on this chaps.
It would only be for pleasure use, I wouldn't be looking at tracking it or anything like that.
I am totally up for doing bits and bobs on the car and have experience on working on all kinds of motors in the past, but nothing German!

I will keep thinking about this over the next few weeks, basically my mind is working along the following... a 964 (I would love this to become a reality), a Boxster S (an option I fear I may regret, only because I will always wish I was in a 964), or forget the idea and stick to my mint condition Alfa GTA. [&:] I hate making decisions like this [8|]

Thanks again people!

Hi Vincent,
As an example my 964C2 is up for sale with 106k miles-runs like a dream-see http.//www.pistonheads.com/sales/1287131.htm-but is above your price level but could be open to sensible offers.
Cheers,
Colin.

Hi thanks for your post. It is indeed above what I was hoping to be paying, but it looks like a very nice example though.
Just to make myself clear I would not be looking to buy for at least 4 - 6 weeks yet! I am only just starting my research now [;)]
Thank you very much for the heads up on the advert and I wish you the very best of luck with the sale.

Hi Vincent,

Mine has covered 135,000 with no bottom or even top end rebuild. Still pulls well and last rolling road was 283bhp. I am planning on a top end soon but I think with regular servicing high mileage is not too much of an issue.

Good call Simon.

When I was looking it was clear that if you go outside of what most people regard as their ideal spec you could pick up a bargain. Spec such a Tip boc puts a few people off. Go for a colour that is less popular. Or even go for a Targa or Cab as oppose to a Coupe.

It all helps!

eBay is a good source as its sometimes the last hope of people getting a quick sale and you could pick up a bargain. You could try making a cheeky offer on cars that have sat around on Pistonheads for ages.

Do make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection though, even if you're on a budget :)

Chris

I started looking for a 964 Carrera about a year ago, I wanted a manual, and I ideally wanted 2 wheel drive for a more fuller 911 experience! I also wanted sports seats after having a 944 turbo with them! On top of that I wanted lowish mileage or one with a recent engine re-build..........the list went on! After looking at many cars, I figured I would have to spend between £14k and £17k for a good car which ticked all my boxes. However, as chris says, if you are happy to live with something thats not your ideal, you can find good cars at lower prices. I am becomming a real fan of the Targa nowadays, there is something really 'retro cool' about them. So much so that even RUF have just come up with there own modern version (even if it has batteries where the engine should be)[:'(]!

However, if you do find a suitable car for around £11k, expect to spend a fair amount of money on it over time as these cars arn't cheap to maintain. Although, long term, this should be offset by these cars having done their depreciation!

I owned a Boxster S until recently. Nice car and very capable. Again, not a cheap car to maintain (whatch out for worn 2nd gear's)! These are still dropping in price however, plus you see about 5 parked in every supermarket car park! Whilst there are lots around, prices will stay low - for example look how many 996 turbos are available for £30k!!! But you do get alot of car for your money!

Me, well I have to be honest. If I had a budget of around 10k, I would be looking for a nice 968 or for even less, a 944. Having owned a 944 turbo (and regreted selling it ever since) I can't tell you what a good car they can be. They are now rare, and holding their value (even going up in some cases) and are built in the same way as the 964 - to last!! Whats more, they are generally cheaper to maintain than the rear/mid engined cars - bonus!

Anyway, most of the fun is in the searching - enjoy

Simon

Only just popped back in and found all the replies! Thanks people [;)]
Thanks for all the advice and further pointers.
To be honest (and please don't take this the wrong way) the 968 and 944 are just not for me. I am giving up my GTA which I love to bits (there is something other worldly about the alfa v6), so the only way I would be willing to do this is if it is for my childhood dream car [:D]If I can't get that dream then I will stick to the happy reality of my GTA! But for now the research and looking continues!

And for all you German car fans who may now know, this is what my Italian GTA is [;)]

As simon said try to keep an open mind. The targa is a great drive for eg , just make sure the roof is in very good condition.
Travelling to see cars and getting the required checks can cost a lot so dont pass on a car because its the wrong colour;
it wont matter if you get a good one. Take as long as you can and get the 964 enthusiasts companion by Adrian Streather.

That 964 targa 3.6 now sits on my drive and to be fair its a nice car with only minor faults like heater (now sorted)and a few other little bits.Dont let a cat D put you of if it means a cheep car as it did not affect my insurance.
cheers

Well this one is in the budget...

Could be a dog or could be a gem...you never know until you have a proper look.
