Ray Stobbs 964

As a lot of you will know a good friend of many people on here, Ray Stobbs, passed away in January. He owned a lovely polar silver 964. This car will shortly be for sale by Ray’s wife Lynn, after she has used it for a couple of Porsche Club events. So what do we think it is worth?
It is a 1990 Carrera 2 Manual with cup alloys and mirror’s and plastic intakes and has done 160,000 miles. It has had a complete top end re build last year carried out by Ray, who was somewhat of a perfectionist. It has also had a full bare metal respray, apart from the roof. He replaced all the springs and dampers and is lower than standard. It has a comprehensive history. Ray had been meticulously going through the car as his intention was to keep it for a long time.
The car was used by Porsche for display purposed along with other silver 911’s, for the launch of the 991 at Silverstone, Goodwood and several other events. Each time he was loaned a brand new Porsche delivered on a transporter.
Below is a link to an article written by Ray regarding his 964 experience.

If you Google his name it comes up with a few relevant articles.
Prices seem all over the place at the moment, what I am looking for is constructive views on a price that the car could be expected to sell for not an over inflated asking price.
Thanks in advance.

looks a nice car and with the engine rebuild and paintwork I think somewhere in the 40-45k mark. If the interior is good.

I echo that....possibly nearer to 45. The high mileage will not detract from one of the best 964 models and the meticulous attention to detail lavished on her over the recent years. Arctic silver with factory cup 1's just adds to the desirability.
Cheers, Nick.

Keith, the Club can sometimes assist in these circumstances. Clearly Lynn should benefit from our collective knowledge. One solution may be the Porsche auction later in the year - Silverstone Auctions are a Club partner and would, I am sure, help achieve a best net price. There are also reputable firms such as Strasse and Specialist Cars of Malton who just supported R7's event at Leeds this weekend. If nothing else, they would give an informed opinion.

Ray's car is very desirable, I would suggest maybe ringing Chris Seaward at Cornbury House and seeing what solutions he can come up with - Steve Kevlin would also assist with a valuation.

All the best.

Thanks gentleman for the replies.
I agree that £40-£45K would seem to be where prices are at the moment.

Rob. I had mentioned to Lynn about selling to a dealer and that it might be the easiest option for her, no tyre kickers and time wasters. It just comes down to price. When it get nearer the time for her to sell I will suggest I make some phone calls.
There is a friend of Ray's that is interested in buying, but again it is down to price.

Thanks again
Keith

I'm not sure that the private seller is going to reach such high prices, those are dealer prices which come with warranty etc.
It should be upper half of the 30's for sure.

I advise against auctions, they are way too expensive, they cost the seller to enter and typically an extra 30% for the buyer who has to pay VAT on top of the buyers fees.
If it had an extremely low mileage it might be the way to go.

Not sure if any moves have been made on this Kieth yet. Generally agree with Dave above re auctions - there will be a buyer and seller premium (typically 10%-12% if buying and fee plus @ 5% if selling). Add VAT to that %age as well.

Unless it's a crazy priced RS and some ridiculous low mileage, Strasse and Specialist Cars aren't going get anything like the margins they're used to (i.e. £200k sale price for an RS..!!). However, someone like RPM Tecknik do do SOR and can take the 964 in to promote and sell on your behalf (they do sell loads of 964's) or at least put people in touch whom they know are on the lookout for a decent 964. Worth giving them a bell and asking for Greig in sales. They might even know of Ray's 964 already - who knows!

I would love it myself but am saving myself for the right AM V8 Vantage to come along that I can add as well (or even a 996 C4S)... Keep us up to date with how it goes..

Marcus

Thanks gents for all the replies.

The car is going to be re-valued by the Porsche club too get an idea of insurance value. The Hagerty valuation tool still has them quite high.

I am going to have a chat with a few dealers to get an idea of how they think the market is at the moment. There is someone interested in buying the car but the price has not been discussed.

Thanks again, will report on any progress.

Hi keith, as an ex-964 owner I'm going to go against some of the optimistic values above. Especially since I have the experience of selling a very similar car earlier this year. Like Ray's mine had a lot of money spent on the engine and running gear and some on the bodywork. Mine and Ray's would be considered high mileage and therefore of less interest to a collector. Mine was priced to sell at £34K and sold reasonably quickly (took about 6 weeks from first advert to closing the sale). I'm sure Lynn would like it to be sold with the minimum of hassle and won't want people messing her about in the process. Hence I think £35K is the number to sell it with the minimum of fuss.

As well as being a 964 owner I am also a part-time dealer and would be happy to help to sell the car on a commission basis (we are not greedy).

We have helped other PCGB members via this process and would be happy to do so again, drop me a PM if this is of interest.

Thanks,
Kevin

As a dealer, what price would you put it at?

I have spoken to a few dealers and non are prepared to talk about prices unless they see the car. As you can imagine, Lynn does not want to drive around the country to be made daft offers. She is in no hurry to sell.

The right person will come along eventually and get themselves a great car.

Difficult position to be in Keith, obviously you want to obtain the best price in respect of Ray's lavished time, passion and appreciation for his car and at the same time obtain a respectful sale for Ray's wife. Its a shame there wasn't a close family member who wanted to continue Ray's passion or even become a 964 enthusiast.
I'm sure who ever buys it, will be in possession of a lovey example. Hopefully Ray kept a detailed history file, to support all that has been done to it and which will also help assure the asking price.
I'm sure you will arrive at realistic value / price; whether that be for immediate sale or a wait for the right buyer.
Good luck
Paul

Any luck with Ray's 964 Keith?
I've passed the details on to a colleague working in Germany. He's currently looking for a 964!

Sorry it's taken me a while to reply.
Ray's car is not officially for sale as yet. Lynn is still waiting for a Club valuation.
Will post on here as soon as I know anymore.

Regards

Keith
