Radiator Grilles - Updated Thread

I got Zunsport grilles fitted to my 981GTS and have had the warranty extended twice with them fitted. I specifically told the OPC on each occasion before renewing the warranty and they were adamant that it wasn’t an issue? Whether that would be honoured if I had a warranty claim is another issue. Bit you can be sure I would be having some dialogue with the OPC if that were the case! I think when you are offering over £1k for the 2 year extended warranty they are keen to take your business.

PS I really rate the Zunnsport grilles and wouldn’t take them off even if OPC objected, would seek another warranty or not bother. After all I have had no issue with the car in 4 years and have spent over £2k on warranties so far!
Hi Spenny, Any chance of some pics of your fitted grilles please? I'm considering the Zunsport ones for my 981 GTS but would like to see better pictures than the ones on their website before committing. Thanks in advance.

Here's a pic of my car which I think may have been sold on with the Zunsport grilles I fitted to it:

If you right click and open in new tab/window you can expand it to full size where you'll see the detail of the grilles better.

You may need to host it elsewhere on Imgur or Flickr and link to it, which is what I've done.

Twinfan - that really helps given I have a white GTS (albeit without any grilles)...thanks. I'm happy they'll look great on that basis.

No problem. In my opinion they almost look factory fitted on the 981 GTS, no-one would guess they weren't unless you got really close and saw that the edges of the grilles don't perfectly match the contours of the inner edge of the bumper cutouts. However, they're pretty darn close, or at least they were on my car [:D]

I fitted a full set for the front on my 63 plate CS. I had to use a tie-wrap for the centre-outer ones as they didn't seem very secure. Otherwise, they were a doddle to fit and look like factory parts.

I've had some warranty work done today and the OPC didn't even mention them. I'd buy them again if I replaced the car.

Don't know if this helps but when I fitted the Zunsport Grills to my 981 GTS (with Adaptive Cruise), I used the thick polythene bags that the grills came in to protect the bodywork when fitting all 5 grills. Makes such a difference when sliding the grill in and out to adjust and fit. Once fitted I slid the polythene sheet out - not one mark!! They did require some gentle bending to fit correctly though. I also lined the body work with electrical tape where the clips either hook over the bodywork or, more importantly, the clips 'slide' onto the bodywork. Unless you bend down and shine a torch into the grill, the tape cannot be seen.

My 5 cents on the Zunsport grills:

After reading raving reviews of the Zunsport grills I was slightly disappointed with the fitment and quality of mounting on my 981 CS.

Pros:

[ul][*]fairly easy to install (but finicky); [*]Simple to remove without damaging the plastic trim/bumper (if, like me, you're worried about your extended warranty being voided). [/ul]Cons:

[ul][*]the side grills, particularly those in the centre section, seem to be too large. This leads to the centre grille being placed 1cm in front of the lower grille; [*]The centre grille also doesn't sit snugly, despite all hooks being in the right place and the screw taped in. [/ul]Perhaps I am being too fussy but I would have expected better fitment for £200+. Maybe Zunsport does a better job when you have them fit it for you, but my at home experience was more like a 6/10.

If I were out of warranty, I would have preferred fitting a £20 mesh from Halfords (or the like) from behind when taking the front bumper off.

Hi

I had a base Cayman but have changed to a GTS so have the much more open front end.

When I had the base, I had enquired about having grilles fitted and was told it would impact my warranty. I just wondered if anyone has these fitted that uses Teeside, Leeds or Newcastle OPC and have confirmation from them that they are OK (and the car is under the manufacturer initial 3 year warranty).

Please drop me a PM is that is the case.

Many thanks

Paul

Can't comment directly on the OPCs you mention but I've had two lots of warranty done on my CS at Sheffield OPC. They commented on the grilles being non Porsche on the second visit, but the warranty was honoured. You could always remove then if need be. I wouldn't be without mine. They should be fitted standard imho.

Interesting developments regarding my query with my local OPC and the supplying OPC.

Supplying OPC has said yes all is ok with the grilles (Sales advisor and warranty manager - confirmation in email)

Local OPC (for servicing) said no. I then told them I had an email from the supplying dealer and they said it is fine to have them fitted ( again in email).

So to avoid any risk i’m Ordering a set of front grilles For the GTS. I haven’t checked (yes very lazy) but any guides in the thread regarding tips for installing (and are they simple?)

PHB1969 - I fitted mine and there's a technique to avoid scratches & damage - PM me and I'll send you my phone number.

Teesside said that they could not do the 111 check and sell me an extended warranty with them fitted. To be fair to them they said this at the outset, even though they lost the sale because of it. The situation changes though, as you can see from the comments on here. I have not heard of a claim being refused because they were fitted.

Given that the 111 point check is apparently no longer required for cars with an existing warranty ... is there a loophole here ?

My 718 has grills fitted and Portsmouth OPC have given it a 2 year annual service without comment and this year I've just bought an extended 2 year warranty from them, once again without comment on my grills. Seems to vary from one OPC to another ?

Hi, I fitted Zunn radiator grilles shortly after buying my 981. I have never experienced temperature issues even when enjoying high speed driving at the Porsche Performance Centre. The benefits of no stone damage or leaf build up around the radiators makes fitting a no brainier. Unguarded radiators are prone to these risks and consequent replacement cost. The fastidious may spend time on their knees fishing debris out from the radiators. My knees are not up to the task. GT4s are fitted with grills so I think dealerships would be hard put to refuse a warranty claim for faulty radiators. I understand Zunn manufactures grilles for OEM fitment.

GT4s are indeed fitted with grilles but are designed and tested with that reduced airflow in place. Porsche AG may refuse a warranty claim if grilles have been fitted to other models despite what any OPC says. The OPC doesn't have the final word on a claim, Porsche AG does.

At least that's what I was told, which is why I didnt bother with an extended warranty on my 981 GTS.
