Race Battery

I had a race battery on order from DT's but they've just phoned to say it's not available, so anyone got any ideas on where or which type to buy? I'm hoping to loose weight (me and the car) and get it mounted on the floor in the passenger footwell. How many CCA's should I go for??

I have a powervamp with a ali mounting bracket and conventional terminals on it sat here in my garage. Drove around with it in the 968 for a bit when I got it to make sure it was up to the job but never used it in the race car. e-mail me back if your interested on a deal.

Thanks Neil, but I've gotta be absolutely sure of the provenance of any item. We do a race series with a pits-stop driver change and we must switch off during the change over. If the thing decides not to start it could/has cost us places. So I'd rather a brand new warranty item, thanks.

I have just seen your Number plate!,Tom and Gerry, that was on a Caterham?Did you race in the 2010 CSCC intermarque summer race at Spa?I am sure i remember you,it was wet !!?[&:][:D](Just as we went out!) I also think i saw you in some sports V saloons races?

Well this is the outfit I got it all from;

..real shame I haven't used it. Might still though at some point in a project. The S2 has a small conventional battery which we think is from a metro (was fitted with the bat box by EMC). Funny thing is the cars weight distribution is a little low in that corner so if anything in my case I would like to get more weight into the back of the passenger seat area.

Good luck in FC this year mate.

You can use virtually anything so long as you have an Anderson connector! Ive run a glorified motorcycle battery and it was surprisingly adequate.

That's right Mark, I raced Caterhams for a long time, and Tom (my son) started two years ago, but after a few spectacular crashes in Caterhams (not us but friends in the same race) we changed over to the 944. Much safer.

I use a Powervamp PVR30 and I can recommend it. I have killed one by letting it completely discharge ([:)] I forgot it was connected for a few weeks...), but apart from that its been great, I get loads of starts per charge - my car doesn't idle well at certain temps so 10 starts in a row don't seem to phase it, so you could almost certainly go for something smaller without problems.

Voltphreaks Lithium VPH 750 weights just 2.2kg but its not cheap..

At nearly £1,000 in America, thats a demon tweek thatd be fairly far down my list! [:D]

In theory you can build your own super-light lithium ion battery, but I lost interest before I worked out how to charge it.....

That's $1000 not £ still not cheap though, they are expensive because of the micro chip that controls them, you charge with normal battery charger.

It was £1,000 including VAT, but exc shipping and duty (if applicable). It was an oldish price though.

They have come down as the tech becomes more affordable, they are expensive but how much would you pay for 2x FB front wings, fitted and sprayed to match? (and it still wouldn't look great) You'd probably lose more weight with the voltpheaks too...

Very true. I went to great lengths to save weight on my old grey car, because I couldnt do anything to increase the power. In the summer I ran it using a 4kg motorcycle battery and I didnt have any problems. Initially I started it from a full sized battery using an Anderson jack, but I soon realised that itd start perfectly well from the bike battery .

Most of the benefit for 4% of the capital expenditure... [:D]

I have used these for years, same as Red Top [;)]

The PC 680 started my VX 2.0L XE and a John Eales tuned Rover V8 without issues
