Pulley wheel!

Guest

New member
The back half of my pulley wheel keeps self destructing.
I think this is because there's is play between the shaft and wheel half.
The shaft is quite grooved and worn.
The shaft is part of the generator thus I now need a new (or recon) gen also new pulley halves.

This is a pity as there's nothing wrong with the gen.[:(]

Can anyone recommend a good place to get these parts from?

Any one else had this problem?

Hi Ant

I don' t know about a new one (cost££££) but the best person I' ve found for good second hand parts is
Tim Jones in the States. email: NewGmundR@aol.com
He' s a great guy plus... When I add the cost to the shipping/import fee its still ends up cheaper than buying parts from here! (just takes time)

Also some turn up on Ebay.com like...

Someone on the board could have one kicking around?

I' ve never had the same problem but I do remember with an old VW - the pulley locking wedge (tech term??) became worn and slipped out every so often!

If the pulley half is seated on a worn shaft then there will play and therfor exponential wear. As the pulley speeds up and slows down with the engine, it creates more and more wear as it moves around untill... well you know!

As you say there is no way to practically save the Gen. I have the same prob at the moment as the thread is stripped on my Gen shaft. You can get exchange Gens from Bosch. A few people do this like Roger Bray. It may be worth trying to ring Bosch direct. Make sure you are using the right pulley halfs too.

Make sure you follow the supplied instructions to the letter when installing the new Gen as it needs to be ' run' as a motor first. Not doing this will mess it up big time.

Have just spoken to Andy Prill (AJP Engineering) the most helpful man in Briton on these cars.

He has given me some good news; it turns out that the metal mount that has worn on my gen is held on with a woodruff key and is replaceable.
I have now ordered new mount and pulley wheel halves from him.
The project for this weekend is to now persuade the old mount off the gen shaft (without sprocket puller!).

It's such a shame to have my car in the garage over bank holiday weekend.[:(]
But I am off to Cornwall for a wedding next weekend so hopefully I will have it fix by then.[;)]

Thanks for your replies and help.

You rang the right man (he is our Register Tech expert btw).
Its an easy enough job to do, just don' t drop that key in the engine anywhere.
It small and very easily lost.

Glad to know it wasn' t the spindle after all.
