When the light is on, the cars quieter as lower speeds. The valves in the system open at about 4000rpm, but it's also dependant on throttle position. Accelerating gently won't make any difference, but press halfway down or more and there's a change in note as the valves open - keep your foot in and the noise just before changing up at 7000rpm is to die for

Dont think it is quite as simple as the valves stay closed to x revs. They are definitely open at tickover and I think (may be wrong) throttle input and revs are monitored to vary the vacuum and open / close the flaps when certain preset conditions are met. This is why alot of people disconnect the vacuum line to have permanent open flaps, although it is recommended you connect the hoses every so often so the flaps dont stick

Just found this on piston heads now am confused. Will have a play see what happens.
997.1 had two versions of sports exhaust; depending on model year
Model year '05:
The diode in the "Sport” button lights up: sports exhaust system is active.
The diode in the "Double tailpipe” button lights up: sports exhaust system is not active.
The diode also flashes in the "Double tailpipe” button to indicate the regulating status of the flaps in the rear silencers.
From model year '06:
The diode in the "Sport” (I-no. 639/640) and "Double tailpipe” buttons lights up: sports exhaust system is active.
