Project / parts car...

I noticed that one a couple of days ago too. It looks very nice!

One thing worries me though; Is that all the damage that's required for the insurance companies to write our cars off?
 
I think it may well be . Given that insurance companies base the cost of repairs on using genuine manufactures parts and using designated (and usually expensive) body shops for repairs not to mention factoring in costs such as vehicle hire whilst the car is repaired it doesn't take much of a shunt to cause thousands of pounds of damage . Of course sourcing parts 2nd hand and finding a friendly body shop that will do repairs for cash will probably reduce this bill to hundreds but unfortunately insurance companies won't do this no matter how much you beg them not to write off your pride and joy .
 
Minimal damage will write our cars off - its called constructive total losss. Repairs etc cost more than the market value as has been said.
The only way is to buy the salvage from the insurer and repair it yourself. It will still be noted as Cat D or C but is a way round.

You will need to find what's left of the bridge spoiler first, it's obliterated! Maybe the crash site would be a good place to start!!

That's more than enough damage, I've dealt with one otherwise very tidy Lux that was written off due to a small dent in the door! [:eek:]

The way that was calculated was astounding. The door had to be replaced in case the integrity of the structure was affected, obviously it wasn't. So, price up a brand new door from Porsche, add fitting and painting. Give the customer a courteousy car (why are they called "courteousy cars" when you pay for them in your premiums?), plus the high costs of a large workshop to repair it. This was several times the value of the Lux, so there was no chance of the insurers doing anything else.

The good news was that the guy bought the "write-off", fitted a used door in the right colour for about £40, and now has a lovely car again; albeit with no value at all as a cat-d. [:mad:]

There is almost no damage you can do to a 944 now that WON'T result in a write-off, hence my recommendation that you have a decent policy with an agreed value. You'd be shocked how little the insurers value your car at if you need to claim; think "we buy any car", and halve it!
 
If you look closely at the front end, it looks like this car might have been pushed into another vehicle when rear ended. The front bumper is a little crooked. And why aren't the doors closed? Maybe the body is sprung somewhat. Only a trip to the body rack would tell for sure.

Even if the body is twisted out of shape, seems like plenty of spares to cover that cost - especially a complete 250 power train.
 
So tempting for my secret project... unfortunately I the last time I bought a donor for that I ended up spending out another few hundred pounds replacing the sills and, er, seem to have aquired a second turbo[&o]

Surely that cannot be written off and sold for bits, crying shame a repair with good seconhand bits would still be a bargain, keep it for a few years and sell on value is matterless.
