possibility of working air-con for my s2

after discovering my s2 has a fully fitted air-con system,,i mentioned this when my car was in the workshop,,tower had just restored working air -con to 964 and said that a kit is available for just over £100 and that an additive can be used with the old gas so no need for a new compressor etc,,tower thinks it could be back to working order without too much of a problem and might be worth doing,,anybody else come across this kit? or the additive?,,air con sounds tempting for next summer just wondering if it would be worth it? and is the air con system that effective when it is working?,,,cheers jason p

Air con is great when working. You will need a a new dryer (reasonably cheap ) possibly a new condensor ( more expensive) and maybe new lines. These go porous over time. Don't bother with s/h lines - the fitting cost is huge and they probably won't work

What I did finally was to get some new flexible air con hose and get the metal ends of the old lines swaged on by pirtek. My aircon guy finallygot it all working on my turbo but it cost a fortune.

I fear it won't be as cheap or quick or easy as one might like; you'd need the new control panel as well as any bits that have gone west over time. And also bear in mind that the system was de-commissioned for a reason, and my guess would be that something expensive had stopped working. Getting it working again would make for a fun project, but it may be an expensive project as well (particularly if you are paying someone else to do the work.)

Whether it's worth it is up to you. I've never owned a car with air-con, but news reports like this:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/weather/10128658/Run-of-wet-summers-could-last-another-10-years.html

... suggest it may be less and less worthwhile in years to come. [:(]

yeah, but they could last another 1 year or they could last another 1000 years. weather forecasting is a load of guessworking nonsense in my opinion, about as reliable as horoscopes. we've had a decent summer so far up here in Leeds. My air con works and has been used a bit this year cos my normal air vents only chuck out boiling hot air, so without aircon me and the missus would be like James May when he drove that racing Aston against the RS and lambo, i.e. starkers.

do you want pictures ?

ppppfffftttt... they can't get the forecast right 48 hours in advance. Why would I give any credence to their 10 year predication? [:D]

However, in the remote chance that they ARE right, working air-con would be even more beneficial as it helps enormously to demist your car.

just read Oli's reply - if you have a non-ac set of controls, then who knows what's fitted? I'd be tempted to get an a/c man to look it over & maybe pressure test the system first before deciding what to do.

The new gases will work with the old compressor (they did on mine) - just need to evacuate the system first.

In an attempt to get this thread back on track (and prevent it from becoming a discussion about climatic conditions, although I admit I was guilty of pushing it off the rails ... ) Jason's car foxed me as it had a load of extra gear under the bonnet including what looked to be an air-con compressor and hoses but no air-con button on the dashboard. I didn't know what I was looking at when I first poked around, and had to compare it with my (non air-con) S2 to be sure. It's either a car that is half-way through a very good aftermarket air-con conversion, or a car in which someone saw fit to remove the air-con controls from the cabin (and replace with standard ones) but not the rest of the system.

I suspect the latter. Which brings to mind a lot of questions about why someone would do that, leading me to suspect there is something wrong with the system which would have been quite expensive to fix.

Ah I see the confusion. He has no air con button. Might be handy for me though as the air-con on the cab (it's the only ay to demist the plastic screen) needs to be regassed but of course you can't get the original refrigerant, so I would be very interested in it.

yep no air-con button,,it would seem the other owner just neglected the air-con system,,maybe "a bill too far" but its something i would consider if it can be done for ok money but i dont think i will be that lucky,,when my s2 goes back in for the bodywork,,i will get a full assessment then whether the air-con could be sorted for sensible money and if so,,have it done in the new year but as i mentioned i dont think a will be that lucky,,jason p

Very interesting, and as 924nutter points out aircon makes a better job of clearing condensation doesn't it.

For me, an alternative way to spend the money would be to retro fit manual windows, and while I'm at it I'd replace the laughable electric tailgate release with the cable pull from a 968CS!! I've had continuing problems with this...every time the lock gets a bit stiff the bellcrank on the motor breaks.

Luddite? Me?
