Portsmouth Help

Does anyone here live in Portsmouth? I have to decide whether to pay for a car without seeing it first by tonight due to inability of seller to be there for me. A quick once over would be great

This has been going on for over 3 weeks! Whenever I can go to buy it, seller can't. Whenever seller can be there, I can't. He'll have it delivered at his cost now, but still want it seen by someone first! Deadline is tomorrow as he's then away for weeks

I'd be inclined to agree with John, buying a car without seeing it is not a good idea, same as buying one without taking someone who knows the cars.

There's a lot of bad 944's out there so be careful.

Pete

Isnt this a car that looked quite good? A Guards Red series one? Id ask on TIPEC too.

Yes, that one from ages ago! He's been at sea for 2 weeks, got paperwork back, but out at sea again for 3 weeks on Friday. I'd arranged to travel down Thursday but he couldn't do it. Same Wednesday. He wanted Monday but I was getting my dad out of hospital! So back to where we were 2 weeks ago!

What is TIPEC?

No one else will buy it without looking at it - if he has gone to sea, wait - or look else where!

Thanks, I've put a post there asking for help too. I've never bought a car I've never seen before, and think I'll struggle to break the habit.

Yeah, I do see your point. I would wait, but annoyed I could have got 3 or 4 in the time I've been waiting for this one! He also needs the sale because he says he's bought a 911! I had hoped to have a nice car to start working on and going to a few shows already, (un)luckily the weather has been too shit so I don't feel like I've missed out too much at the moment.

Thanks PSH, someone from TIPEC has offered to take a look if I can pin the seller down tomorrow! Hopefully by this time tomorrow I'll be awaiting delivery of my 1984 guards red

just be very careful mate, the fact he says he is at sea sets alarm bells ringing straight away, this is a well known scam, and if he has offered to deliver at his cost then thats another part of the same scam.

i would only buy the car if someone has seen it in the flesh, checked out the documents etc, and i would then arrange for another time to meet to carry out the transaction where money is handed over, and then you take the car away!

be very careful!

where did you see the car advertised? and is it an average price, or a bargain?

Is this a April fool type thing? How can someone buy a car and be the legal owner if the previous owner is not present to sign a bill of sale and the V5 Document - you have been advise DONT DO IT - now go ahead and do it!

I have all those concerns and more!

He does have an MOD email address, which supports the story.

A TIPEC member (since Sept 2011) has offered to look it over for me today, which is probably better than me looking it over as I've never had a 944 before! The seller said he would try to get an hour out to let him, which made me wonder why he couldn't get an hour out to meet me.....

i would then arrange for another time to meet to carry out the transaction where money is handed over, and then you take the car away!

That's what I wanted all along, and the constant delays and his unavailability when I can get there has raised some concerns.

My thoughts exactly! I'm struggling to see myself transferring £1400 and waiting for a car to arrive at my door with the signed v5 on the passenger seat! I've never bought a car where I haven't been present at the point of sale before. There are a lot of 944s out there.

Hi Chrisjcoe

Now I don't want to put you off your purchase as it may be a good car but I suspect all is not as it seems. I've just read the description given in the link you've posted and an alarm bell rings in my head so thought best to pass on my concerns to you and also to others here who may know more than me. First I'm always suspicious when someone makes excuses to bad parts saying he likes to keep it original, after all I bet there's no one on this forum who keeps sticking window motors just to keep it original. What really concerns me though is the engine, it's described as an 84 car which would fit with the older square dash but states it has a 2.7 engine? I could be wrong and I'm sure someone here will correct me if I am but I thought the 2.7 was only in the oval dash cars from around 88?, so if true then all his talk about not doing things due to keeping the car original doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Having said this you could look at it the other way and if the car is sound elsewhere decide that your getting a more powerful car for less money.
At the end of the day it's your decision and who are we to put you off, a good condition 944 is worth £1400 of anyone's money.

Good luck

Pete

Edit: Ahhh Alasdair beat me to it...:)

states it has a 2.7 engine?

I did raise that with him before I bid, asking if it had a later engine fitted, and he says he listed it wrong thinking it was a 2.7 when it was a 2.5. I did wonder though, as usually you know the engine size of your own car!!!
