Porsche VTS Recall

Hi Guys

Have had my Carrera S Manual (Racing yellow with black "spats", Sport Techno wheels, etc) for about 6 weeks and it is good, very good. I traded in a Gen 2 Cayman S and before that have had an R8 4.2 V8 manual and a 997 Carrera S manual. I bought the 991 almost on the spur of the moment having expected to wait for the new Cayman to arrive next year. However, this yellow baby winked at my wife as we walked into the showroom (OPC Silverstone), she liked it and 3 days later I was the proud owner! No regrets at all so far though and it certainly looks gorgeous.
I have just received a recall letter over a problem with the VTS tracker. As usual the wording of the recall letter is very bland but when I looked online I found a magazine review where the test team had been stranded when their Carrera S refused to start; they were subsequently told that the problem was due to the VTS interferring with the auto stop/start system. The auto stop/start on my car has been intermittent and I had already booked it in to be looked at before the recall letter arrived. Has anybody else had a similar problem or does anyone have any more detail on the issue, please?
Also, in my car I can quite clearly hear the aircon running when the car is idling. It is not a loud or rough noise but is noticeable inside the car and it stops when I turn off the aircon. Can anybody tell me if this is normal, please?

Can't say about Porsche's system but on my Mini, and they have fitted it since 2007, when the battery or starter motor are not in a good position to work with the stop start the system automatically shuts off for a recovery period. It happens very rarely on my daily commute and I could count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times the system has been disengaged over my 2 years of ownership



 
Lamboman - thanks for your reply. I have got my ac set to Soft as I don't like sitting in the middle of an icy gale! Maybe I will set it to Normal and see if that makes a difference.

Daro911 - thanks for your comment too. I think that my problem is somewhat worse than the one you sometimes have with your Mini - my "intermittent" actually means that the auto stop/start has hardly ever worked properly in the relatively short time that I've had the car. The OPC said that it worked fine when they did the pre-delivery test (but then they would probably say that, wouldn't they!) so I'm pretty convinced that the problem is linked with the activation of the VTS.
 
I have a November 2011 991 model and in August, just before I left UK for a while, my car refused to start twice, the second time needing an embarrasing overnight rest to recover. The dealer has promised to fix it but it is interesting to hear other have a similar issue. I have never been convinced that a brand system, although ours is made by Cobra, is the best way to go. On my Boxsters I always used Tracker without a hitch though I could hear a hum when the car was switched off and quiet. this was not an issue.

Welcome to the forum and ownership of your new car (pics please!) first one in yellow I've heard of on here. The VTS problem is not one I've come across and yet to receive that particular recall notice yet... I've not had a problem with the VTS thus far, but had no end of issues with the same system on my last Cayenne. When you say the stop/start is intermittent, as you probably know it doesn't always cut out if the battery calls for more charge. Sometimes the engine cuts back in for the same reason. As far as aircon noise goes, does yours have sports exhaust? If so, switch it on and give it a rev, that'll fix it[:D]
 
Salisbees - thanks for your response. The symptoms you describe with your car (failing to start but then ok if left for a few hours) are exactly as described in the magazine test. I don't want to sound too pessimistic but their car ended up on a recovery truck!

Peter - thanks for the tip to solve the noisy AC - I didn't realise that the systems were linked!! Think I'll just turn up the music volume - it sounds a cheaper option!

On the saga of the VTS and auto stop/start things have progressed. I took the car back for the recall work which was completed with no problem. The dealership had no idea what the problem with the VTS transmitters was but were adament that there was no way the VTS could interfere with the auto stop/start. To my extreme embarassment they then proceeded to prove that my stop/start system was working! For manual cars the owner handbook (p 127/128) does not specifically say whether the footbrake needs to be pressed or not for the stop/start system to work. I had assumed that it was similar to PDK cars where the pedal does need to be depressed but in my car the stop/start only seems to work when neither clutch nor brake are depressed. However, the next day I did my driver experience session at Silverstone and in their car the stop/start seemed to be only dpenedent on the clutch pedal not being pressed - the brake pedal made no difference. Can anybody out there with a manual 991 help this poor dipstick out with a definitive answer, please.

The driver experience session was excellent fun and much more useful than the one I did at Millbrook about 5 years ago. Thoroughly recommended for anybody who hasn't done it yet.

my manual 981's stop/start works with the foot off the brake ..

but once the car moves (if you take your foot off the brake and the car is on a slope), the engine starts
 
Thanks lamboman but does your engine stop if you keep your foot on the brake, select neutral and release the clutch - because mine doesn't!
 
Thanks again Lamboman - I thought that was how it was supposed to work and you have confirmed it. Looks like another trip to the dealer for me!
