Porsche scripted door handles

Hopefully someone can satisfy my curiosity, when trawling through Ebay searching for all things Porsche related I have noticed some people selling Porsche scripted door handles at extortionate prices. Can someone tell me what 944 models were these fitted to or were they an optional extra.

Thanks

Wayne

People on forums have started to tell each other that they were an option; but the truth is that they were fitted to 1986 and 1987 model year cars. All cars from these model years had them and no cars built for the 1988 and later years had them: they had similar style handles but without the Porsche script. Any later cars which have them have had their originals replaced, which was quite common, as for years when they broke they stayed broken - repair parts are a relatively recent development.

Thanks for that I must say you are definately a mine of information. My curiousity is now satisfied.

What a nice way of saying that 'you remember a lot of useless sh*te' [:D]

I seem to have remembered lots if trivia but the really important stuff is less clear... I did a lot with the cars in the 1990s, but I was seduced by Japanese tubocharged cars in 2002 and I only seem to have had enough room for so much information. Unfortunately I seem to have forgotten much of what I knew about Imprezas too now; as I spend more time with 944s again...

Well you can call it useless sh*te if you like but you certainly answered my question, perhaps some might say I ask a load of sh*te

1988 cars came with them, the Turbo S only available in 1988 certainly did, the VW lads go mad for them as they fit a few of the early Golfs and the like.

Why would anyone want a Porsche logo on a Golf, I don't get that. Perhaps it's a question best asked on a VW site.

I go to the VW festival every year at Harewood House, loads of cars with Porsche derived stuff, wheels, especially !
Maybe because they aspire ? [:D]

my 88 turbo S has 'em too
bog std original car
Obviously - they are lighter too...[8|]

wayne, its something to do with, they bolt straight on, and its a touch which makes your v-dub different...........
I kinda understand, but dont think I would do it.

A beetle (VW one) on fuch's does look good though.

They really didnt. I had an M758 too, when it was just five years old, and that didnt have them: it had 1988 pattern handles with cental locking (introduced with the '88 pattern handles).

Even in 1994 I could sell script handles for £100 a pair, and they were very popular as 'upgrades'. Over time the handles have been swapped on many cars, either because people liked them or because their original handles broke and couldnt be repaired.

I assure you that Im not mistaken - I spent almost ten years dismantling the cars, starting when they were still a current car.

Simon, i need to check, but I dont think my car is a 758, its red/Black trim and very late chassis. (serial 1600 +/- 40)

Its totally original.

Unfortunately[8|]

There again, what do I know about handles compared to you from the handle capital of the world[:)]

At the risk of creating disagreement in the ranks, my '88 Turbo S also has script handles, which although they could have been replaced at sometime, I doubt it...

They are exactly the same as Mk1 Golf handles - hence they fit Mk 1 Golfs - Porsche used the VW parts bins a lot - in fact I`d go as far as to say all the locks and ignition barrels are VW

If you mean that the handles have "PORSCHE" stamped into them, then I've got them as standard on my '88 2.7.

I've really started something here haven't I, but at least it's got people talking

Maybe the Turbo S models only came with them, but mine are original factory fit year 88. ?
