Porsche data logging

I understand that modern electronic trickery allows service centres to query the cars own data.
This can be used to help resolve problems when things go wrong, or more usefully to pre-empt problems and allow appropriate servicing to occur.

However, it is also like Big Brother and can report your little misdemenours.

Does anyone know what is recorded and in what detail?
I presume they would want to know if it was over-revved, but what else?

Hi Stuart

Good question !
I have requested some information on this topic from Gary Sorrell (996 technical support) regarding the control unit memory and features, hope this helps you.
The control unit records vehicle mileage, 1st and 2nd stage over-revving and cannot be wiped off, of course diagnostic fault codes are recorded and either clear themselves after 10 startups or by your local Porsche centre.
The unit also provides valuable information about the exact operating conditions and timings at which a fault was recorded for help with rectification.

What clever cars we own, did you see the 996 Turbo on the latest HP computer advertisement on TV

Thanks John.
If I had thought about it, I guess I could have asked Gary myself. In any case I guess it will be of interest to other readers.
What does 1st and 2nd stage over-revving mean? Is this just the extent to which it is over-revved?
I did notice the HP ad. I think the tone and approach is a little strange myself - " HP products allow Porsche to make cars that make the wind happy" - hmmm, bit too " touchy-feely" for me.
I wonder if HP had to pay Porsche to use their name to add credibility to HPs product - even if not then Porsche get some advertising on TV(!) for free. However, I wonder how many of the general population will realise that it was Turbo.
