Saw this on a friends Facebook,it's about the classic department in Stuttgart,lots of 959s,356s,911s but also a couple of 944s and a 928[:)]

It's amazing how they have so many parts for all these old cars still,very good backup on old products eh?

Thank you for finding the link Mark, an excellent film. I had wondered where the Classic workshop had been relocated to since the completion of the new museum. The Classic workshop was previously situated at the rear of the Werke 2 building when we visited it in 2003 and was much smaller than the new facility shown in the film. The visit there was part of the then PCGB organised, Factory Tour.
 
Crumbs. That's a slice of heaven, right there. German car workshops are always lovely places to be. One that specialises in old Porsches has to be one of the best.

(Have to say, Herr Salm-Reifferscheidt's suit is a particularly nice piece of workmanship as well. I have a bad habit of noticing good tailoring and that's a fine example.)

I felt good when i saw the 944s on the ramp amidst 959s and other Porsche exotica,they might be undervalued in monetary terms here in the uk,but they are Classic Porsches that are thought well of in Germany that are a part of Porsche history,I felt bad about the mods on my red turbo after that guy was talking about originality[:D]

A new dash would be expensive anyway??If it is cracked and it bothers you how about whip it out and repair the crack and recover it at a trimmer?

Popped into Porsche Leicester with the red turbo,its MOT time,Oil Service aswell and brake fluid,my sunvisor bracket on drivers side is snapped and i asked Glenn in parts to get me one,he replied with "we stock those",i was blown away with that![:D]Ancient car,obscure part.....!???
I must of looked disbelieving,he popped in the back and reappeared with a little bag full of them!How awsome is that!
PS.He then gave me a Porsche Classic sticker...!
 
Nice one! [8D] I am always impressed with OPC Leicester, Glenn is always so helpful whenever you need anything and often going that extra mile giving you information he perhaps doesn't need to.

That reminds me, I need to chase him as ordering some new seals for boot pin receptacle area on body - hope to collect this weekend if it doesn't snow too much! [:D]
 


Ok so some are amazed that this exists at the factory.


On one of the PEYT (Porsche Early Years Tours) we visited the RUF Factory. http://www.ruf-automobile.de/en/en-aktuelles-news.php Even more amazed to find across the road from the main factory they have a classic restoration department which was restoring all sorts from the early 50's onward.

Yes that's nice,but I didn't see any 944s in the video,and our 944s were not manufactured by RUF.The Ruf factory would be ordering the parts from Porsche for large parts of "their" cars even.
Original point of the post was to point out that our cars still have great factory parts backup and a factory workshop for those lucky enough to be in the position to have their cars serviced or indeed restored by the original manufacturer.It was a nicely shot and interesting video I thought.
The fact that Porsche still stocks many parts for such ancient and long out of production cars is a fact I would think most enthusiasts would be amazed at.
 
And this is why we all should support OPC to ensure Porsche continue to buy in classic parts. Many 924 turbo specific parts are now NLA due to low demand over the years but surprisingly most 924 parts are still good. You will find your OPC keen to maintain your parts and servicing business currently.
 
As far as I know the Porsche HQ doesn't give a fag's butt about keeping providing parts specific to certain older models any more than the law forces them to, and the task of supporting older models with spares has been delegated to OPCs, meaning the supply of such parts will greatly vary depending on which OPC you are dealing with.

The factory will have a series of parts currently NLA remade only if the demand is high enough, and it is possible that the quality will not be up to par with original parts. The most recent example that springs to mind is 968 M030 anti roll bars - I have heard that new ones are not hollow, they are solid. Unsurprisingly, prices have a tendancy to go through the roof for such remanufactured parts.

As much as we can revel in how lucky we are to still be able to get some specific parts from new, the breakers' golden days are IMO pretty much about to start, which could help propelling our cars to the 'classic' status some of the "100% original" analists have been eagerly waiting for :)
 
??If the HQ doesn't order the parts the OPCs can't sell them.The back up comes from the top and filters down...
If you watch the Movie their stance at the factory is certainly to support the older cars,my OPC has regular contact with Porsche UK regarding older cars and i am sure that originates from the factory.
I buy second hand parts for my race car regularly,i bought an engine season before last and had it rebuilt.I needed seals and bits and bobs,i went to the dealer for those.I would be in trouble if i couldn't get these parts.
I am sure quality will vary in comparison to the original batches,sometimes up and sometimes down,thats normal when you make items decades apart?I have the 968 M030 ARBs on my racecar bought recently and have had no problems,also on my 944s..
To say the factory doesnt give a "fags butt" (try that in American English)[:D] about old cars does not add up to me,why would they do recalls on a car from 1990 and do work on it?They can't be under any legal obligation to do so.We need the second hand parts dealers for sure but i am glad i can still get bits from my dealer up the road and with a PCGB discount aswell.
 
Consumables such as seals, gaskets, filters, etc will always be more or less easily available since they can be sourced from OEM suppliers out of the official network.
I actually orders some oil filters recently at my local OPC as they were a fly's ar*e ([;)]) cheaper than from my usual supplier.

Replacing free of charge a part due for a recall on any car, even if it's been maintained out of the official network is a legal obligation, pretty much regardless of its age and condition. Any OPC will (or at least should) check for that when a new-to-them car drives in for a service. It goes without saying that if any customer drives in with an older car and asks for a service they obviously are not going to throw him out if said customer is ready to pay for a service, no? They may even outsource the work to a Porsche indie if their mechanics have no field experience with said older cars... Not that it's a bad thing, quite the opposite actually, but not quite I would expect when driving into an OPC and expecting the level of internal excellence usually associated with this brand.
 
In the UK,the Official Porsche centres really do welcome older cars and compete heavily pricewise with specialists- there is a national marketing campaign trying to entice older Porsche owners back that have left the official route,my 944 turbo is in the Leicester Branch for its MOT and Service,it is completley standard for older cars to visit the main dealers here alot of them have technicians which have older car experience,the guy who works on my turbo has a 964 C2 and his father a 944 turbo a real enthusiast.There is always a 964 or 993 on one of their ramps.Today they were looking at the valve clearances on a 70s 911 apparently.
They offer special Older car Labour rates and discuss what your car actually needs if it drives low miles.Older Porsches are not a chore at the centres i have visited especially Leicester.
The Dealer Principle,Sales manager and Parts Manager all attended the PCGB Christmas Regional christmas party,these guys love the cars you can tell when you speak to them.

It has multiple cracks!![:(] One which stretches to the top of the glove box
